Based in our Sherwood Park, Alberta head office, reporting to the Human Resources Manager, the HR Generalist is a key team member responsible for managing full-cycle HR functions while driving a strong workplace culture, employee engagement, and corporate social responsibility. Supporting day-to-day HR operations, this role focuses on recruitment, employee engagement, employee relations, career development, training, and workforce planning initiatives. The Generalist also leads and supports national cultural and social responsibility initiatives, including the Culture Team and United Way Committee. A proactive, hands-on approach is essential to identifying and addressing HR matters promptly to cultivate a dynamic and engaged workforce. Additionally, this role ensures that all cultural and social responsibility initiatives align with the company’s core values and long-term goals. Success in this position requires strong change management skills, the ability to influence while maintaining engagement, exceptional organizational abilities, and the capacity to effectively manage workload in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
Essential Responsibilities
- Responsible for full cycle recruitment and processes nationally, as assigned.
- Identify innovative recruitment strategies through networking, trending best practice, social media, and other platforms to continuously improve processes and our organizational brand.
- Responsible for new hires and new hire processes as assigned nationally, including onboarding and orientation and the full lifecycle of an employee.
- Lead, support, coordinate, and communicate all employee engagement initiatives nationally and in all locations, including leading the Culture Team and United Way Committee.
- Develop and implement strategies to enhance employee engagement, retention, and the promotion of a positive and inclusive work environment.
- Drive change management initiatives that foster collaboration and buy-in while maintaining employee engagement to drive impactful initiatives that support our culture and organizational objectives.
- Assist in tracking and reporting on the success and impact of cultural and social responsibility initiatives.
- Support management with the guidance of the HR Manager on employee relations, talent management, career development, employee recognition, and other HR responsibilities, as assigned.
- Identify training needs within the business units and coordinate learning opportunities, leadership development, and coaching programs to enhance employee management capabilities.
- Manage employee relations issues, including conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, and performance improvement plans, ensuring a positive, compliant, and productive work environment across the organization.
- Support workforce planning efforts to align HR strategies with business goals.
- Subject matter expert across Canada in labor laws, employment standards, and company policies in order to support business leaders on legal issues and implement risk mitigation strategies.
- Establish and build trusting relationships within the HR team, payroll, management, and the employee group by being attentive, responsive, and delivering exceptional customer service when responding to questions and inquiries.
- Support the preparation, analysis, and reporting on various HR metrics such as employee information, recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and more.
- Write and implement various HR related policies and programs for compliance and in support of the business objectives as assigned.
- Assists in managing HR technology including but not limited to UKG, SharePoint, recruitment sites, and social media platforms.
- Assists the HR Team with the day-to-day administrative responsibilities such as employment agreements, processing leaves, terminations, new hires, surveys, presentations, training, government programs and surveys, etc.
- Support the human resources team with auditing requirements and reporting.
- Identify organizational issues and make recommendations to resolve HR-related matters.
- Stay current, monitor, advise and network to identify and apply best practices and innovative solutions for all HR related initiatives.
- Support the HR team to cover for team time off.
- Confidentially manage sensitive information.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Post secondary education with a focus on Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, is an asset.
- 3-4 years of proven and progressive HR experience in core human resources is an asset.
- CPHR designated or actively pursuing the designation is preferred.
- Experience leading committees to enhance corporate culture and support social responsibility initiatives is required.
- Working knowledge with UKG or other HR technology is required.
- Ability to proactively identify and act on HR matters without hesitation.
- Experience in handling workplace concerns or certification in workplace investigations is required.
- Training and career development experience is a strong asset.
- Experienced in HR programs and initiatives such as recruitment, talent management, workforce planning, and employee engagement, is required.
- Strong knowledge of legislation and Human Rights across Canada is required.
- Fluent in English with proven competencies in verbal and written communication is required.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work with individuals at all levels of the organization.
- Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (Word/Excel) is required.
- Valid Driver’s License, vehicle registration, valid insurance & own transportation is an asset.
- Successful completion of a credit check, criminal background check, education verification, CPHR designation, and employment reference checks is required before employment.
