The Opportunity:
WSP Canada Limited (WSP) is seeking a junior to intermediate level Socio-economic Specialist to join our Prairies and North Human Environment Team, preferably based in Calgary, Alberta. Our team of social scientists work in the areas of environmental and social impact assessment, environmental permitting, policy and program development, social management planning, Indigenous and community engagement, and Indigenous Knowledge and land use studies. WSP is looking for a detail-oriented individual who is willing to learn and take on a diversity of duties related to social science research, engagement, and regulatory reporting.
What you can expect to do here:
The successful candidate will work in the Human Environment Group, supporting an established team of social scientists. This position works largely in the area of regulatory applications and permitting. Primary duties will include:
- Support socio-economic and land use assessments, as part of environmental impact assessment for a wide variety of sectors including infrastructure, power and renewable energy, mining, and oil & gas
- Support secondary research, primary data collection (remote interviews, focus groups, in-community data collection), including qualitative and quantitative approaches with Indigenous Nations, user groups, communities, and the public
- Support other WSP services as may be required, such as socio-economic monitoring, permit applications, and social compliance reviews
- Support Indigenous and public engagement activities for projects
- Assist senior staff with Project coordination and management, proposal development, technical presentations, logistics planning and booking
What you’ll bring to WSP:
The position requires that the successful candidate has a solid technical and/or academic background. Key requirements include:
- A university degree (graduate degree preferred) in a social science (e.g., geography, anthropology, sociology, economics, urban/regional planning)
- Minimum of 1 to 6 years of relevant professional experience, with experience in regulatory consulting considered as a strong asset
- Demonstrated social science research skills and experience (e.g., analysis and interpretation of statistics, surveys, interviews, focus groups), including design and implementation of research programs and reporting
- Excellent work ethic with an attention to detail and strong organizational and time management skills
- Highly effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills
- Ability to work independently in a dynamic, collaborative environment
- Strong team player with experience working on multi-disciplinary projects and teams would be an asset
- Experience working with Indigenous Nations, communities, and the public would be an asset
- Available for business travel and extended working hours as may be required from time to time
