Job Description:
Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Materials Engineer to join our team! In this role you will get to manage and evaluate the materials used in airport construction projects, ensuring they meet the required specifications and quality standards.
The position requires an individual who can collaborate closely with project teams, contractors, and regulatory agencies to guarantee the selection and use of appropriate materials throughout the project lifecycle.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Materials Selection and Specification:
Evaluate and select materials for use in the construction and maintenance of airport infrastructure, ensuring compliance with technical specifications and industry standards.
Develop material specifications and ensure they are adhered to throughout the project.
Collaborate with design teams to choose materials that meet both performance and safety requirements for airfield construction (e.g., runways, taxiways, terminals).
Quality Control and Testing:
Oversee the testing of materials in the laboratory and in the field to ensure they meet the necessary quality and safety standards.
Develop and implement materials testing protocols, including procedures for soil, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials used in airport projects.
Analyze test results and provide recommendations for adjustments or substitutions of materials if required.
Compliance with Regulatory Standards:
Ensure all materials and processes comply with applicable airport construction regulations, including ICAO/FAA standards and other relevant local or international codes.
Ensure that materials meet environmental and sustainability requirements for airport construction projects.
Work closely with government agencies, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders to ensure that all materials used on the project comply with safety and environmental regulations.
Collaboration with Project Teams:
Work with construction teams, engineers, and architects to ensure that materials are available on time and meet project specifications.
Provide technical support to project managers and other teams regarding material issues that may arise during construction.
Collaborate with procurement teams to ensure the timely and cost-effective purchase of materials.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain detailed records of all materials used, including test results, purchase orders, and inspection reports.
Provide regular updates and reports to project managers and other key stakeholders regarding material testing, quality, and availability.
Assist in the preparation of project documentation and reports for regulatory bodies and clients.
Material Lifecycle Management:
Oversee the tracking and management of materials from procurement to installation and throughout the project's lifecycle.
Monitor the durability and performance of materials during construction and provide recommendations for future maintenance or replacements as required.
Identify opportunities for material optimization and cost reduction while maintaining quality standards.
What Required Skills You’ll Bring:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in materials engineering with a focus on airport infrastructure projects, including runways, taxiways, and terminal facilities.
Proven experience in materials testing, quality control, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements for airfield construction.
Previous involvement in large-scale construction projects, particularly those involving airfield infrastructure, is essential.
Skills & Knowledge:
In-depth knowledge of materials testing, construction materials, and engineering principles as they apply to airport projects.
Strong understanding of airfield pavement construction materials, including concrete, asphalt, and aggregates.
Familiarity with ICAO, FAA, and other regulatory standards for airport construction materials.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with project teams, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
Proficiency in relevant software tools, including materials testing software and project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera).
What Desired Skills You’ll Bring:
Professional Certification:
Certification in materials engineering or related fields (e.g., ACI, ASTM, etc.) is preferred.
Additional Skills:
Experience with sustainability and environmentally friendly materials for airport construction.
Knowledge of pavement design and maintenance strategies for airport runways and taxiways.
Familiarity with risk management principles related to materials performance and quality control.
Ability to provide technical recommendations and solutions for complex materials challenges.
