Job Description Summary
The Project Coordinator - Electrical Technical Support coordinates and inspects the work of UBC Building Operations trade personnel, consultants, and contractors. Manages funds and other resources required to implement all aspects of projects and minor individual works to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of product to customer within the policies and guidelines of the University. This position prepares electrical design drawings, and provides technical support relating to the electrical trade area for UBC Building Operations.
Organizational Status
Reports to Electrical Technical Specialist, Trades Section, UBC Building Operations.
Work Performed
- Supervises, allocates, develops schedules and coordinates the work of Head Tradespeople, Consultants, and Project Teams employed in providing services to the UBC Building Operations, while ensuring compliance to budget and schedule.
- Initiates tender calls (RFP & RFIs), reviews tenders and recommends contract award, monitors the construction and materials supply process, and confirms proper functioning and delivery of all systems prior to the release of holdback funds.
- Ensures that jobsite safety programs are in place and functional, and that workers under his/her jurisdiction work in a correct and safe manner, and follow safe practices.
- Coordinates reviews and prepares estimates for projects as required, and provides general assistance in the preparation of budgets, and related matters. Works with project team, Regulatory Services and UBC Records to ensure project compliance with University and departmental guidelines and as-built documentation.
- Reviews project scope, drawings, materials and labor; monitors the computerized project schedule and budgets for compliance and ensures that all documentation is in place for the proper management of the projects, including all approvals, permits, payments, shutdown requests, change orders and financial commitments.
- Maintains control and keeps records of project progress from start to finish for administrative purposes; participates in pre-job meetings and reviewing job scope, resource allocation and the project schedule; checks progress reports and change orders; contacts and orders ancillary contractors and materials to satisfy project and shop requirements.
- Attends ongoing and final inspections of projects, with regard to workmanship and conformity to UBC standards and all relevant codes and regulations, ensuring that deficiencies are corrected in a timely manner. Deals with logistical, material and schedule problems arising on the construction site. Communicates the project status and schedule with clients, and ensures compliance to the project schedule and budget.
- Prepares designs, specifications and estimates for new or renovated campus facilities, related to electrical equipment, systems and infrastructure, and maintains appropriate records.
- Provides an advisory service to University departments on technical problems relating to low-voltage (LV) equipment and systems, such as elevators, fire alarms, distribution, and lighting control.
- Reviews outside consultant designs to ensure conformity with University standards and all relevant codes and regulations, as it relates to electrical and electro-mechanical equipment and systems.
- Analyzes schematics and drawings, and follows up with required updates to documentation related to facility infrastructure.
- Assists in establishing appropriate standards for new construction or renovations of University facilities.
- Provides training to, monitors and inspects the work of electricians or other trades people.
- Stays current on regulatory additions and changes to the electrical field, and aids in the updating or development of the UBC technical guidelines in consultation with the Electrical Technical Specialist and other Facilities Electrical Managers.
- Advises management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous. Provides updates and advises on preventative maintenance systems and operational effectiveness programs.
- Participates in meetings as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
- Keeps current with trade maintenance concepts, technology and theory, and maintains familiarity with manufacturer and regulatory maintenance requirements.
- Participates in additional training to keep skills up-to-date.
- Responsible for the correct use and safe keeping of assigned vehicle, materials, tools and equipment used in the execution of the work performed.
- Ensures personal protective equipment is used at all times where required.
- Ensures compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety legislation, guidelines, standards, policies, procedures and practices. Responsible for performing the work in the safest manner possible.
- Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Work is performed within prescribed and accepted trade standards, in accordance with job requirements and specifications and external regulatory requirements. Makes resource allocation, project coordination and compliance decisions for a variety of projects; inappropriate repair/maintenance decisions could delay resolution of problems and adversely affect user access to equipment/system and possible safety of users.
Supervision Received
Works under general direction and within relevant University policies and guidelines; works independently, occasionally requiring consultation with the Electrical Technical Specialist or Electrical Trades Manager on new or complex problems.
Supervision Given
Coordinates and supervises consultants and project teams. Periodically may be assigned responsibility for providing training, mentoring and or checking the work of other individuals.
Minimum Qualifications
Technologist certification in relevant area or High school graduation and relevant journeyperson trade certification. Valid BC Driver's license. Seven (7) years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own. Preferred Qualifications
Expert knowledge in the Canadian Electrical Code and related CSA standards. Technical Safety BC - FSR-B, or the ability to gain FSR-B within an agreed-to time. Ability to interpret drawings and specifications at a very high level along with creating sketches and documentation packages. Solid computer skills including AutoCAD, MS Visio, MS Excel, MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Project and MS Power Point. Experience with Workday, Planon, and ETAP is an asset.
