About The School Of Trades & Skills
The School of Trades & Skills is dedicated to creating the next generation of skilled trades workers. Working closely with industry, the School provides learners with education in a variety of trades and apprenticeships using the newest equipment. The School is also home to the Olds College Brewery. Fields of study offered within the School of Trades & Skills include: Brewmaster and Brewery Operations, Hospitality and Tourism, Trades, Apprenticeships & Pre-Employment, Transitional Employment Program, and Farrier Science.
The Opportunity - Instructor, Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship Program
We are seeking Instructors in the Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship program on campus for both full-time and part-time positions. The successful applicant would provide instruction for 4 courses within the 4 year program, which follows the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training curriculum guide. The anticipated start date for this opportunity is August 2025.
Responsibilities Include 200 Hours Of Instruction Of The Following
- Period 1 – Workplace Safety Legislation and Regulations and Site Assessments
- Period 2 - Surveying and Hardscape Installation and Maintenance
- Period 3 - Landscape Construction including Water Features and Landscape Lighting
- Period 4 - Contract Management
Key Job Functions
- Plan and prepare for instruction in alignment with overall program objectives
- Delivery of instruction, addressing various learning styles and needs relative to course content
- Evaluate and report on student progress
- Work with other College departments to facilitate and support learner success (for example, accommodations)
- Create a learning environment that encourages student engagement and success
- Be accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods of time for counseling and mentoring students in matters related to academic success
- Monitor classroom supplies and tools inventory
- Perform various tasks to support student success:
- First point of contact for student concerns
- Monitor student performance and behaviour
- Submit appropriate reports and forms as required
- Maintain confidentiality and security of student information
- Learn and implement technology and teaching tools to enhance the educational experience when appropriate
- Perform other activities related to instructional assignment such as coordinating activities within a program or programs, and participating in College development initiatives
- Collaborate with colleagues to scaffold skills within courses and programs to create an exceptional student experience
Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required
- Journeyman Certification (Red Seal) preferred in the trade of Landscape Horticulturist and 5 years work experience in a career occupation relevant to the subject matter of the course; or a combination of work experience and/or industry certification in a career occupation relevant to the subject matter of the course(s)
- Knowledge, skills, and/or training in instruction/teaching
- Dedicated to creating an inclusive and diverse learning environment that embraces individuals from all backgrounds and perspectives
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in their teaching, research, and interactions with students, colleagues, and the wider community, including having deep understanding of the value of diverse perspectives in enriching academic discourse and fostering a sense of belonging for all members of the campus community.
- Ability to meet deadlines, work independently and collaboratively with a team, resolve problems and make decisions in accordance with College policies and procedures
- Knowledge and skills in current technology applications relevant to the program and subject matter content.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and oral)
- Experience with International Students would be an asset (for example, diverse cultural and learning needs)
- Actively promote and reinforce practices that prioritize the well-being and security of all individuals at Olds College, show a proactive attitude towards safety measures, continuously striving to enhance safety protocols and procedures to ensure the highest standards of protection, collaborate with colleagues to instill a culture of shared responsibility and accountability when it comes to maintaining a safe and secure work setting
