Scientist - In vivo Radiobiology

Position Summary:

The Scientist, in vivo Radiobiology, will conduct in vivo pharmacological experiments using assays relevant to the development of therapeutics for oncology. The candidate will perform experiments and will provide technical support for studies executed within the radioligand in vivo pharmacology group. Additional duties will include support for laboratory operations including animal tissue culture, support preparing and executing benchtop assays, equipment maintenance and reagent/supply inventory.

Candidate must be able to work independently and in close collaboration with scientific teams, be a strong, proactive communicator, multi-task effectively and operate under the requirements of institutional animal welfare committee and Canadian Council on Animal Care guidelines.

Responsibilities:

Dosing, Formulation, in vivo study implementation (75%):

• Execute in vivo studies that require animal handling techniques for mice, observation skills, tumor cell implantation and measurement, anesthesia and necropsy.
• Live animal PET/SPECT/CT imaging under anesthesia and recovery support.
• All standard rodent dosing techniques (IP, SQ, IM, and IV) and sample collection techniques (cardiac puncture, etc).
• Formulation and administration of compounds, and necropsy of studies.
• Responsible for compliance with animal care and use protocols and compliance with laboratory research and animal care and handling procedures.

Tissue culture and in vitro experiment support (15%):

• Routine mammalian tissue culture, including passaging cells, growth media preparation/formulation, cryopreservation, preparation of cells for engraftment and routine quality/sterility testing.
• Sample preparation, processing and aliquoting to support in vitro experiments such as ELISA, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, etc.

Laboratory maintenance, support and study Analysis/Follow-Up (10%):

• Routine lab maintenance and upkeep including but not limited to lab waste management, preparation of compound vials and gavage needles, material ordering, compound storage/management and maintenance of lab supplies.
• Basic data analysis for in vivo studies such as tumor growth plots, survival curves, etc.
• Adherence to good research practices, SOPs and notebook documentation standards.

Basic Requirements:

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology or related field and a minimum of three or more years’ experience with in vivo research/animal handling.
• Strong proficiency with intravenous injection and tumor measurement in rodents.
• Experience with mammalian tissue culture, including aseptic technique, biosafety training, media preparation, routine passaging of cells and cryopreservation.
• Experience with live animal procedures under anesthesia, such as imaging.
• Familiarity with standard in vitro experiments including ELISA and flow cytometry.
• The position will observe typical business hours, Monday through Friday. Some weekend and holiday work may be required and will be communicated with ample notice.
• Experience with radioactivity is considered an asset.
• Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) certification is considered a strong asset.

The physical demands of this job are consistent with a lab environment. Very minimal travel possible < 5%.

Full range of motion and ability to use both hands. High degree of manual dexterity. Regular lifting of weighted objects.
