SOCAN is a not-for-profit copyright collective dedicated to ensuring music creators and publishers receive what they have rightfully earned for the use of their work. SOCAN supports and represents more than 180,000 songwriters, composers, and music publishers. Through licensing, global royalty collection and advocacy, we help creators to keep making the music that entertains, moves, and inspires us.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Chief Membership Officer, the Director, Film & TV plays a crucial role in engaging with composer members to understand their needs and concerns. This position focuses on enhancing member services by collecting feedback, collaborating across departments to resolve issues, and clearly communicating the implemented solutions to members. The Director will lead efforts to bridge SOCAN and screen composers, ensuring their priorities are well-represented and reflected in SOCAN's services. Externally, the Director will position themselves as a trusted advocate for composers, staying informed about industry trends, maintaining a visible and active presence within the composer community, and ensuring SOCAN remains proactive in adapting to evolving changes.

WHAT YOU’LL DO / KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Represent the specific needs of film and TV music composers, deepening our organizational understanding, identifying their priorities, the services they seek, and any adjustments required to better meet composer needs.
  • Contribute to the implementation of corrective measures when needs are not fully met.
  • Collaborate with other departments and internal teams (e.g., Queries, Member Service Agents, or Account Executives) to effectively resolve issues, address operational challenges, and develop and implement tailored solutions.
  • Maintain active awareness of industry trends, innovations, and emerging practices in the film and TV music sector.
  • Collaborate with the Communications and Marketing Department on the content and methods of communication when engaging directly with film and TV composers.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with screen composers by being present in the screen composer industry ecosystem, proactively engaging with them and addressing their needs as a credible and influential figure within the industry.
  • Serve as a liaison between SOCAN and industry associations (SCGC/SPACQ), driving collaboration.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING / QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working in the entertainment/music industry.
  • Post-secondary education in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge and expertise in handling agreements and administration - ‘knows how to speak composer’.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (oral/written).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service.
  • Knowledge of the music industry.
  • Knowledge of SOCAN.
  • Proficient in use of MS Office (Word, Excel) applications.
  • Bilingual in English and French preferred.
