Status: Part Time Days
Wage: $27.12 - $35.51 per hour (Dependent on Qualified Experience)
Shift Rotation:
Week 1: Friday & Wednesday
Week 2: Thursday through Sunday

The Licensed Practical Nurse is a supervisory position, which works under the guidance of the Registered Nurse. This position is responsible for assessing, monitoring, implementing, evaluating, and documenting Resident care. The LPN works in partnership to improve the performance of team members and the organization in providing improved customer service for Residents and families. The LPN is responsible and accountable for his/her nursing practice defined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) and Continuing Competency Program (CCP). He/she is responsible for current and valid registration and adherence to care centre protocols.

RESPONSIBILITIES

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITES

1. Serves as an advocate to ensure that the Resident's needs are met.
2. Participates in staff development and orientation.
3. Adheres to and promotes Infection Control practices.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assess, monitor, implement, evaluate, and document Resident care.
2. Responsible for Resident admissions and discharges.
3. Communicates with Residents, families, and staff.
4. Reports changes in Resident status to RN.
5. Prepare and administer all medications including narcotics via the following:
1. Oral
2. Subcutaneous, including hypodermoclysis
3. Transdermal (creams, ungts, patches)
4. Vaginal
5. Rectal
6. I.M. with certification
7. G-tube medications
8. Inhalations
9. Sublingual
10. Eye/ear GTTS
6. Prepare and administer insulins
7. All insulins must be double checked and co-signed by another RN or LPN.
8. May administer heparin or adrenalin
9. Heparin and adrenalin must be double checked and co-signed by another RN or LPN.
10. Administer PRN medications including narcotics and standing orders
11. Independently initiate standing protocols for bowel care.
12. Check and sign drug deliveries from Pharmacy.
13. Supervise and ensure competent care is provided by team members.
14. Assists with the enforcement of Fire and Safety and OH & S regulations.
15. Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

1. Graduate from an accredited School of Licensed Practical Nurses.
2. Current Registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta.
3. Certified for administration of oral medications, narcotics, and subcutaneous injections.
4. Completion of Physical Assessment Course.
5. Intramuscular injection course and certification in CPR is preferred.
6. RAI/MDS COMPETENCY IS REQUIRED

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

1. Excellent verbal and written skills in English language.
2. Must have good knowledge, attitude, and skills in dealing with geriatric and/or physically and mentally disabled persons and their families.
3. This position requires maturity, tact, and the ability to relate to all levels of staff.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE

1. Previous experience in geriatrics or long-term care preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

1. The LPN position requires a significant amount of lifting, walking, reaching, bending, pushing, standing, and sitting.
2. In an average day the employee spends 4 to 6 hours standing or walking.
3. LPNs must be able to lift a maximum of 50 lbs., frequent lifting and/or carrying of 20 lbs.
4. Must be able to manage stressful work situations.
