Building Maintenance Worker
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Job Purpose:
Performs maintenance & repairs related to buildings, grounds and equipment, in one or more areas such as electrical, plumbing, painting, general maintenance and grounds-keeping. In addition, provides quick repairs to items donated.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Establishes, monitors, and carries out preventative maintenance procedures and schedules for buildings, equipment, and grounds. Ensures building and equipment meet all safety, security and fire regulations and policies. Makes recommendations for major repairs and purchases to supervisor.
- Performs carpentry, electrical, painting, mechanical and plumbing maintenance, and repairs such as repairing furniture, constructing shelves, installing switches, replacing plugs and other basic appliance repairs, applying paint and other finishes, repairing drywall, disassembling, and reassembling equipment, replacing sinks and toilets, and applying finishing material such as flooring.
- Monitors work performed by contractors, prepares estimates of labour and material costs, contacts external contractors and trades people to obtain quotes and arranges for major repairs and maintenance work.
- Collects and removes garbage and recyclable materials and ensures the safe disposal of hazardous waste in accordance with company policy.
- Cleans external areas such as entranceways and sidewalks using manual and power brooms, rakes, shovels, and other equipment to remove dirt, leaves, snow, and other refuse. Performs minor gardening and lawn maintenance tasks such as mowing, weeding, pruning, and watering.
- Cleans internal areas such as floors, washrooms, and staff areas.
- Completes and maintains related records such as maintenance logs and security incident reports.
- Moves equipment, furniture and supplies manually and/or using aides such as dollies and carts. Arranges for the movement of goods and supplies between locations. Arranges furniture for special events.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Knowledge
- Grade 12, plus related vocational training such as a building maintenance course. Lesser educational accomplishments would be considered for candidates with significant vocational training or experience.
Training and Experience
Two (2) years recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
The Building Maintenance Worker performs the following:

- Identify, assess, and inform the Manager of Intake and Distribution of internal and external issues that affect the organization.

- Identify and evaluate the risks to the organization's people (clients, staff, management, volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image and recommend to the Manager of Intake and Distribution measures to control risks.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Bilingualism (English/French) an asset.

- Light carpentry.

Working Conditions
- The Building Maintenance Worker rotates as required between three thrift stores and a warehouse.
- The Building Maintenance Worker works a standard work week as authorized and approved by the Manager of Intake and Distribution. Additionally, the Building Maintenance Worker may occasionally work evening, weekends, and overtime hours to accommodate extraordinary activities or circumstances.
- The Building Maintenance Worker must have access to personal motor vehicle as the job requires regular travel between all store locations.
- Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $17.00-$18.00 per hour
Schedule:
- Day shift
- Evening shift
- Weekends as needed
Ability to commute/relocate:
- Ottawa, ON: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (preferred)
Experience:
- Maintenance: 1 year (preferred)
Work Location: In person
