Role Title

AVP, Tax & Estate Planning

Purpose of Role

The Assistant Vice President, Tax and Estate Planning will provide consulting support to Advisors and Wholesalers on tax, product, legal and accounting issues in complex estate, tax and business planning situations. This role is national in scope and the incumbent will have the opportunity to build a national advisory practice supporting key Advisors, Wholesalers and business growth.

Key Responsibilities

Consulting and Advisory Support

  • Provides case-specific consulting and advisory support to Advisors and Wholesalers on tax, product, conceptual, legal and accounting issues in complex estate, tax and business planning situations taking into account the needs of the Advisor and their clients.
  • Provides tax expertise and analysis on new product development initiatives.
  • Supports other internal partners with tax and legal expertise.
  • Represents the company on industry or internal committees with respect to legislative and company initiatives related to insurance products.
  • Fosters effective working relationships with the Broker community and advanced tax and estate experts.
  • Reviews financial plans for opportunities for advanced insurance opportunities.
  • Collaborates with VIP Advisors on advanced and/or complex insurance questions and issues to develop value-added client solutions.

Education and Technical Resources

  • Develops a knowledge base of technical reference materials, educational and sales presentations, webinars and associated documentation to support and educate Advisors, Wholesalers and Inside Sales Representatives.
  • Provides accurate and timely technical information to Advisors and Wholesalers with respect to tax, estate planning and regulatory matters.
  • Increases the knowledge and understanding of Advisors, Wholesalers and other key stakeholders with insurance products by supporting and developing sales concepts/strategies, including supporting illustrations and presentations.
  • Develops and communicates materials regarding new and/or changing legislation.
  • Updates and maintains technical reference materials in English and French to ensure accuracy and currency.
  • Assists and coaches the Inside Sales Team in providing effective assistance.

Research

  • Conducts research regarding technical tax and estate planning issues to support large case files.
  • Maintains an extensive knowledge of tax and estate planning issues related to the insurance industry.
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of insurance company products, concepts, and illustration systems.

Key Qualifications

  • Education (minimum required): Legal or accounting designation with tax experience, (e.g., Masters in Tax or CICA in-depth tax course).
  • CFP and/or TEP designations are an asset.
  • Experience (minimum required): Expertise in the taxation of private companies, trusts and estate planning and financial planning skills are strong assets.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a similar position.
  • Extensive experience dealing with and managing advisors and their expectations.
  • Advanced knowledge of life insurance company products and illustration software.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in personal and corporate insurance planning, and estate planning issues, needs analysis and identification, and solutions.
  • Ability to think creatively to identify sales and product opportunities.
  • Ability to complete in-depth research and analysis on the feasibility of sales concepts, to develop easy to read technical articles describing the concepts as well as illustrations and power point presentations to support a sales concept package.
  • Ability to understand and apply complex legislation to sales situations and to provide meaningful direction and product feature application to the various distribution channels in a way that educates them and serves insurance customers best.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills, with the ability to interpret and communicate technical information to non-technical audiences and manage the message when communicating with Advisors and Wholesalers.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills and ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Computer software knowledge (Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams).
  • Bilingual in French an asset.
