Job Description

We are looking for an individual with strong technical skills and a passion for data and GIS to join the Data Service and Analytics team as a Mapping Technician. If you believe in working collaboratively in an agile environment that embraces new technology to support data-driven decision making, this is a great opportunity for you to join our exciting and fast-paced team.

As an important part of our team of data specialists, you will be responsible for maintaining and updating the datasets in our corporate spatial database and performing on-going data quality control. You will process data requests and provide technical advice to staff and external consultants while analyzing data and creating maps, drawings, plans, graphs, charts and other presentation products. You will also oversee the intake of as-built drawings and subdivisions into the GIS and operate and maintain GIS equipment such as large format printers and plotters.

Duties

  • Maintains and updates corporate spatial database and datasets.
  • Creates and updates maps, drawings, plans, graphs, charts and other presentation products.
  • Inputs as-built drawings into electronic filing system; scans, labels, filing and boxes for records.
  • Provides technical advice to City staff and external consultants/contractors.
  • Provides information and processes data requests in regard to corporate datasets, their accuracy, status and availability; provides assistance as it relates to projects that may be proposed and be affected by these datasets.
  • Performs on-going quality control on spatial data, and when data received externally.
  • Creates and updates preplans fire response zones and emergency response mapping.
  • Assists with validation of area-based tax charges.
  • Assists in software upgrades.
  • Operates and maintains GIS equipment such as large format printers and plotters.
  • Processes subdivisions.
  • Interprets electronic survey data to create and produce base plans utilizing AutoCAD/Civil 3D and other geospatial technologies.
  • Performs quality control on as-built submissions and interprets as-built drawings and updates GIS and related datasets.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a GIS or Drafting Diploma, a high level of computer expertise and experience using GIS technology. This position requires a strong understanding of ESRI ArcGIS products and relational database design along with the ability to interpret survey data to create/update civil drawings. Experience with SQL programming, python scripting, and familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D will provide a competitive advantage. We are looking for an imaginative, proactive addition to our team, an individual who has strong communication skills, pays close attention to detail, and has a commitment to keeping current with new technologies and skill sets.

Additional Information

Pay Rate: Starts at $40.22 per hour with a 2-step progression to $42.87 per hour.
