Position Snapshot

Clarington is growing and our workforce is, too! We are looking for two student positions, reporting to and carrying out work under the direction of the Manager of Development Review and/or the Manager of Community Planning or designate. Students will undertake and assist in carrying out research for policy projects including the Official Plan review, assisting with planning studies and research projects; processing a variety of planning applications; carrying out data collection, maintenance and analysis. They will aid the Secretary-Treasurer for the Committee of Adjustment, and will provide information, comments and advice to the Land Division Committee. The successful candidates are required to be available for the full employment period from May 12, 2025, through to August 29, 2025.

What you’ll be doing

As a Summer Student in Planning & Infrastructure, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Responding to public inquiries related to planning, the Municipality’s Official Plan, Zoning By-laws and Committee of Adjustment.
  2. Assisting with policy planning projects such as the Official Plan review, download of the Region of Durham Official Plan, Secondary Plans, and other policy matters.
  3. Assisting with researching, processing, and reviewing a variety of planning applications.
  4. Assisting with staff reports on planning matters as needed.
  5. Performing Site Visits as needed.
  6. Aiding the Secretary-Treasurer for the Committee of Adjustment.
  7. Collaborating daily with administrative staff and other departments.
  8. Performing other related duties as assigned.

What you bring

The successful candidate will have:

  1. A minimum of two (2) years within a Planning Program at a post-secondary institution is preferred and a student membership with OPPI.
  2. Sound writing and communication skills.
  3. Proficiency working with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word as well as knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and database programs.
  4. Land use planning knowledge and skills.
  5. Must be legally able to work in Canada.

What we offer

Rate of Pay: $20.00 per hour.
Hour of Work: 35 hours per week.

Additional information and requirements

Pre-employment testing for this position may include written and oral testing, to assist in determining the successful applicant. A passing score will be considered to be 60% on each test with the highest score considered in the award. Prior to starting the position, the successful candidate must provide, at their own expense, the following:

  1. Must possess and maintain a valid Ontario Driver’s License Class “G” and access to reliable transportation.
  2. A current (with the last 180 days) satisfactory criminal reference check, directly from a Canadian Police Information Centre. Criminal Records Checks from third party agencies are not acceptable. Applicants who have been employed with the Municipality within the last year and have provided a criminal reference check within the last 365 days are exempt from providing another criminal reference check.
