POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Clinical Supervisor of the Emergency Department will assist in managing day to day operations to ensure there is ongoing support to deliver high quality patient care in a safe, effective and efficient manner. The Clinical Supervisor provides valuable insight into quality improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities that translates department, program and corporate objectives within the Emergency Department that align with the mission, vision values and strategic goals of SJHH. Working extended hours Mon-Sun the role of the Clinical Supervisor will be to maintain seamless clinical operations during the weekday, evenings and weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS:
•Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited University
•Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
•Professional membership with RNAO preferred
•Current CPR certificate; Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS). Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is an asset.
•Instructor in OHA CTAS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, GPA is an asset.
•Minimum 5 clinical experience in Emergency Services/or similar related health field is required.
•Relevant clinical experience
•Strong leadership, interpersonal communication, problem solving, organizational, and conflict resolution skills are essential.
•Interest in understanding financial management, budget process
•Experience in developing policies and procedures
•Knowledge of Quality based procedures, care pathways, and best practice guidelines
•Evidence of strong mentoring, teaching, organizational and prioritizations skills
•Understanding of Quality Monitoring & quality improvement
•Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
•Demonstrated ability to provide effective leadership
•Demonstrated ability to utilize principles of knowledge transfer to facilitate practice change & implementation of best practices
•Demonstrated understanding of relevant health legislation and standards of practice
•Ability to work with a high degree of proficiency both independently and collaboratively with teams
•Excellent project-management skills
•Computer literacy in a Windows environment utilizing Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
•Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, organize, & prioritize work within a dynamic environment

RESPONSIBILITIES:
In fulfilling the mandate of this role, the Clinical Supervisor of Emergency Services will:
•Design day to day work processes that reduce waste and improve value
a. In collaboration with the Clinical Manager determine and evaluate equipment needs – new technology acquisition and replacement planning
b. In collaboration with the Clinical Manager review physical environment and make changes that support workflow
c. Create a safe working environment
•Manage changes to demands of service
a. Anticipate changes in demand – establish surge plans, emergency code preparation, High peek seasons, pandemic planning
b. Execute decisions made by program for future growth and planning
•Minimize adverse events that impact patient, families, staff and organization
a. Investigate and manage issues related to Safety Occurrences, Patient Experience, Public Relations, Health Safety and Wellness, Labour Relations and Infection Control
•Enhance and improve Clinical Service
a. Use feedback to inform and guide the improvement of care delivery systems
b. Addresses real-time patient complaints in consultation with the Charge Nurse
c. Follows-up with Professional Responsibility reports
d. Investigate Adverse Events and Safety Occurrence Reports - Patient and Staff with direction by Clinical Manager
e. Participate in Critical Incident reviews including Root Cause analysis
f. Promote a philosophy of continuous quality improvement
g. Establish continuous quality improvement initiatives based on identified standards of care and evidence-based practice.
h. In collaboration with the Clinical Manager provide Leadership for patient flow, bed management and Regional Commitments transferred to the Department.
•In collaboration with the Clinical Manager communicate corporate, program and department objectives and goals to direct care clinicians,
•Implement and contribute to the development of actionable plans that involve staff in the achievement of the desired goals
•Create a Patient and Family Centered environment
a. Foster teams committed to patient and family centered care
b. Build and maintain relationships with patients and families
c. Use patient and family feedback to improve service
d. Role-model a culture that incorporates equity, diversity and inclusion in to patient care.
