Job description

The School of Social Work in Dalhousie’s Faculty of Health invites applications from qualified candidates for two, one-year (50% FTE) limited term positions at the rank of Lecturer, commencing July 1, 2025.

Dalhousie University is comprised of 6,000 faculty and staff amongst its 13 faculties. Current enrollment is 18,500 graduate and undergraduate students. As part of Canada’s U15 research-intensive group, Dalhousie is an influential driver of the region’s intellectual, social, and economic development. It is the largest university in Atlantic Canada and is located on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq in the heart of Halifax (Kjipuktuk), a scenic coastal city and capital of Nova Scotia which is home to 13 Mi’kmaq First Nations, a deeply rooted African Nova Scotia community, and an increasingly diverse population which also includes a vibrant workforce of people living with (dis)Abilities.

The Faculty of Health’s faculty, staff and students are committed to improving the well-being of individuals, families, communities, and populations through diverse programming with a focus on critical clinical and social justice, collaborative research, and strong community partnerships. The Faculty of Health is one of the largest faculties at Dalhousie, comprised of eight schools, one college and one program, more than 200 faculty members, 80 staff members, and over 3,000 students.

The School of Social Work’s BSW and MSW programs are guided by the School’s mission to create a socially just society. We are concerned with issues of poverty, inequality, and social and political marginality, and seek to develop practitioners and scholars who are critical thinkers and are effective in advancing progressive change, whether through individual or community practice, or through policy and political engagement. The School has a robust distance program with both our BSW & MSW programs, an Africentric BSW program, and a proposed Mi’kmaw MSW program.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of BSW and/or MSW courses both on campus and online delivery. As well as campus and distance delivery, we have a campus BSW Africentric cohort program. Please check the School’s website for more details on the programs offered by Social Work: www.socialwork.dal.ca.

Applicants must have a Master of Social Work, and preference will be given to applicants who are enrolled in doctoral studies or have a completed PhD as well as demonstrated excellence or potential in teaching and in online delivery. Preference will be given to candidates with social work practice experience from a critical clinical perspective. Applicants must be eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW) or a related provincial social work college.

Applicants must include a cover letter stating qualifications and experience; a Curriculum Vitae; a teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy and evidence of teaching effectiveness.

Please submit your complete application package to the PeopleAdmin portal, https://dal.peopleadmin.ca/postings/18444. Please include the Search number in your cover letter.
