Position Description


We are expanding our team and are looking for an Optometrist to join the Ophthalmology Department at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) to provide the highest standard of supportive eye services to patients and their families in conjunction with staff Ophthalmologists.

Here's What You'll Get To Do

  • Participate in regularly scheduled patient care activities by co-managing patients with staff Ophthalmologists.
  • Deliver appropriate patient care and management according to scope of practice specified by the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, and clinical privileges granted by The Hospital for Sick Children.
  • Complete documentation and correspondence related to patient medical record in a timely manner.
  • Ensure accuracy of individual patient diagnostic and procedure codes on clinical billing.
  • Report any issues or patient complaints to the Ophthalmologist-in-Chief.
  • Participate in medical record review when requested.
  • Teach medical students, residents, fellows, technical, allied health and clinical staff as requested.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled rounds and academic events in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at The Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto. Research and academic activities are strongly encouraged.
  • Adhere to the departmental policies, procedures, and scope of practice specified by the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at The Hospital for Sick Children.
  • Adhere to the hospital policies and procedures of The Hospital for Sick Children.

Here's What You Will Need

  • Registered Optometrist licensed by the College of Optometrists of Ontario.
  • Paediatric Clinical Ophthalmologic or Optometric experience preferred.
  • Paediatric vision assessment, including low vision assessment and visual aids.
  • Knowledgeable in the performance of retinoscopy, funduscopy, slit lamp examination for assessment of cornea and anterior chamber, contact lens fitting, and other examinations/services as required.
  • Effective patient care skills.
  • Effective communication skills with children and families.
  • Ability to meet deadlines regardless of circumstances or pressures.
  • Proficiency in retinoscopy, subjective refraction including trial frame refraction.
  • A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity & inclusion.

Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent, 35 hours per week
