**This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to a designated Canadian GM Facility, three times per week at minimum.***

GM is undergoing a major transformation, both in how we operate and in how we will influence the future of transportation. Our Global Workplace Safety team is aggressively working to create a safe and healthy workplace free from workplace injuries and illnesses.

We are seeking an experienced, motivated Industrial Hygiene specialist to support the GM North America Manufacturing Operations. You will be responsible for developing qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments, at US and Canadian facilities, while overseeing the work of UAW-IH Technicians at US Sites. You will also be taking on Subject Matter Expert roles for various IH topics of interest, depending on your focus and our needs. In this role you will be expected to work collaboratively with the Safety teams at your assigned sites to develop solutions to solve IH related issues to protect people at our sites.

The successful candidate will embody GM behaviors and competencies; have a working knowledge of Industrial Hygiene fundamentals and exposure assessment methods. Be proficient in leading IH activities through active facilitation, teamwork and building strong relationships; with a passion for workplace health and safety.

What you’ll Do:

  • Provide site/Customer consultation regarding implementation of Corporate and GMNA Industrial Hygiene policies and procedures
  • Facilitate communications between IH manager, Site Safety & IH work teams and NA Group Safety Manager for assigned facilities
  • Support the Workplace Safety System in particular, IH related Performance and Technical standards as required
  • Implement action items consistent with the Business Plan
  • Recommend, oversee and direct site IH surveys, collect air samples, coordinate laboratory analysis
  • Ensure that site air sample plans, ventilation checks; hazardous materials control processes, MRF Mist Maps and sound surveys are conducted as required
  • Interpret industrial hygiene data and provide recommendations to local management
  • Provide consultation and training for local IH resources including UAW Industrial Hygiene Technicians and other support personnel as required.
  • Provide technical consultation in the area of chemical management with the local hazardous material committees and or the local joint health & safety committees at assigned facilities
  • Interpret and communicate relevant regulatory and consensus standards as well as established GM requirements and best practices where relevant
  • Provide direction and support for the care and maintenance of industrial hygiene equipment
  • As appropriate, conduct or oversee annual industrial hygiene assessments of assigned facilities and provide local management with feedback and support for deficient areas
  • Provide assistance in resolution of regulatory, workers compensation or labor relations issues
  • Perform special assignments as necessary
  • Travel to GM Canada and US Locations

Your Skills & Abilities:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Safety and Industrial Hygiene professional
  • University graduate with a major in engineering, industrial hygiene or safety related discipline
  • Working towards professional certification in occupational/industrial hygiene
  • One year of automotive manufacturing experience preferred
  • Very highly developed interpersonal skills to work effectively with salaried and hourly personnel, build relationships partnerships, customer focus
  • A high degree of regulation knowledge and level of analytical ability to evaluate hazards associated with physical and chemical agents in the workplace and recommend controls for the same
  • Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Highly developed teamwork, communication, organizational skills
  • Demonstrated professional ethics, results orientation, strategic thinking and global focus
  • Must be able to travel to the United States.
