Job Summary:
This position greets patients, assembles, interprets, analyzes, and enters patient financial and demographic data in the computer. Provides general office support with a variety of clerical activities and related tasks. The clerk will be responsible for answering incoming calls, directing calls to appropriate associates, and the flow of correspondence. This position will also assist in scheduling, benefits coordination, and medical records request fulfillment.

Essential job functions:
- Greets patients/families promptly and courteously as the patient arrives at the hospital.
- Answers the telephone, provides requested information or takes messages, and directs caller to appropriate personnel.
- Reviews all patient forms for completeness, accuracy, and appropriate signatures and obtains any missing information from the physician office or from the patient. Including but not limited to:
- Admissions and consent forms
- Estimates
- Medical records release forms
- Scheduling forms
- Responsible for all deposits and/or co-pays according to established guidelines.
- Coordinates and schedules surgical cases by collaborating with patients, families, staff, and providers offices to schedule surgeries.
- Contacts all patients prior to the date of surgery to notify them they have been scheduled, their current benefits, authorization status, and any amount owed on the date of service.
- Interacts with patients, physician offices, and other staff providing timely, accurate, and responsive information. Properly documents any details, changes, or pertinent case information.
- Verifies physicians’ orders to ensure proper procedure scheduling occurs and effectively communicates discrepancies to physician offices and OR leadership.
- Assures accurate and timely notes are kept on all accounts.
- Ensures all cases have benefits checked and authorized prior to case start time.
- Collaborates with and develops relationships with surgeons, offices, and OR leadership to ensure optimal scheduling and resource allocation.
- Confirms all equipment scheduling needs.
- Demonstrates knowledge of CPT and ICD codes.
- Adheres to and enforces block schedules and policies.
- Demonstrates knowledge of HIPAA privacy and security regulations by appropriately handling patient information.
- Follows all applicable policies, laws, and regulations regarding the release of information and the maintenance of medical records.
- Other duties as assigned to meet the needs of Animas Surgical Center at Escalante as well as Animas Surgical Hospital at Rivergate.
- Effectively utilizes ASH and departmental communication tools and systems to stay informed and communicate with the healthcare team. Accesses ASH email account at minimum once a day when on shift to read, process, and respond to emails.

Minimum requirements
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Strong computer skills.
Experience in healthcare preferred.
Experience, training, knowledge:
Requires the ability to work independently, confidentially, and accurately.
Physical requirements:
This position requires lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to ten (10)+ pounds. Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, grasping, handling, and balancing five (5) or more hours per day. Sensory and communicative activities including: hearing, seeing, and speaking to be able to carry out essential job functions.
Working Conditions/Environmental Exposures:
Environmental hazards such as chemicals, solvents, needles, needle containers, sharps, blood, body fluids, various infectious/communicable diseases, infectious medical waste, radiation, and/or radioactive materials. Protective clothing/equipment may be necessary.
ASH IMMUNIZATIONS AND VACCINATIONS REQUIREMENTS: Aligns with CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for Healthcare Personnel.
Hepatitis B: Lab evidence of immunity to Hepatitis B or three doses Hep B vaccine at appropriate intervals.
Influenza: Mandatory from November 1st through March 31st each year.
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella: Lab evidence of immunity to Measles, Mumps, and Rubella or 2 doses of MMR Vaccination.
Varicella (chickenpox): Lab evidence of immunity to Varicella or 2 doses of Varicella Vaccine.
Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap): Documented proof of immunization.
Tuberculosis Screening: All new hires undergo a two-step TB skin test.
