About the Role

LGL is seeking a business-minded Senior Terrestrial Biologist who can develop business, manage projects, and provide technical expertise. Reporting to a Wildlife Discipline Lead, the Senior Terrestrial Biologist will be part of our applied ecological research team with project work focusing on the ecology of terrestrial and wetland ecosystems, primarily in British Columbia and Alberta, with opportunities to work in other regions in Canada or the US.

The Senior Terrestrial Biologist focuses on projects involving research and/or assessments of terrestrial, freshwater, and/or marine ecosystems. The Senior Terrestrial Biologist will use their experience and expertise to support organizational business development through staff mentoring, project and budget development, research and data collection, quality control and assurance, and working with Indigenous communities, government bodies, and another clientele.

What you will do:

  • Leading and supporting projects focused on addressing regulatory requirements or specific client needs, including client contact, budgeting, scheduling, and coordination, related to wildlife and wildlife habitat, vegetation, wetlands, and general ecology.
  • Data management and analysis, including the safe and proper handling of data.
  • Conducting project work to provincially and federally accepted standards.
  • Conduct fieldwork and coordinate project logistics, including scheduling staff, liaising with site contacts, and planning field trips.
  • Preparing and assisting with proposals and project reporting.
  • Travelling for fieldwork with some projects requiring multiple trips away from home (multiple trips per year for up to 10–12 consecutive days at a time).
  • Prioritize safety in all tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you will bring:

  • Master of Science or Doctoral degree, plus 5 years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the application of ecological principles and practices primarily in western and northern Canada.
  • An aptitude for project management of multiple and challenging projects, including budgets, schedules, deliverables, staff resources and client expectations.
  • At least 3 years of project management experience, working from the design stage to the reporting stage.
  • RPBio (BC) or PBiol (AB) certification (or eligibility to obtain this designation).
  • Knowledge of the taxonomy and ecology of the terrestrial flora and/or terrestrial fauna of B.C., Alberta, and northern Canada.
  • Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Competence with field equipment and logistics.
  • Experience as a consulting biologist is an asset.
  • Willingness to work in harsh environments, including industrial sites.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to engage in fieldwork, including the physical elements of that work.
  • Eligibility to work in Canada.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract.
  • This position is based in Sidney, British Columbia.

Application Information:

The salary range for this position is $85,000 to $95,000 depending on the applicant’s experience specific to the role.
