PURPOSE

CST Canada Coal Limited (CST Coal) is seeking an Entry-Level Environmental Technologist to join our Resource Management Team. This position is responsible for performing field, laboratory and office functions which support delivery of the multi-faceted environmental program. The members of the Resource Management Team at CST Coal work together to remain compliant with all legislative and policy requirements governing its Approval to operate issued under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA).

About Us

The department of Resource Management at CST Coal is responsible for a variety of functions that contribute to mining coal safely and responsibly. We are a small department and the successful candidate will be able to participate in many different types of environmental work. ACCOUNTABILITY

Reporting directly to the Environmental Coordinator, the successful candidate will gain hands-on training, assist with on-site logistics, conduct field sampling and reporting.

Responsibilities & Performance Standards

Reclamation

  1. Assist with reclamation work which could involve assessing soil depths, GIS data collection and tree planting/seeding.
  2. Conduct reclamation monitoring on past reclamation.

Air Program (EPEA Section 4.2)

  1. Completing inspections of our continuous air monitoring equipment.
  2. Collecting and processing data from the continuous air monitoring equipment.
  3. Collecting samples and compiling data for report submission.

Mine Wastewater (EPEA Section 4.3)

  1. Conduct inspections on ponds and other mine wastewater structures, and collect samples as needed.
  2. Reviewing data for submission of monthly and annual reports.
  3. Assist with water management through maintenance and planting wetland plants.
  4. Responsible for ensuring adherence to established quality assurance and control of accepted laboratory practices.
  5. Responsible for operating, organizing and maintaining field equipment.

Soil and Groundwater Monitoring (EPEA Section 4.6 and 4.7)

  1. Participate in the inspection, collection and analysis of groundwater monitoring stations, as well as the processing and compiling of collected data.
  2. Collect soil samples as required.
  3. Responsible for ensuring adherence to established quality assurance and control of accepted laboratory practices.
  4. Responsible for operating, organizing and maintaining field equipment.

Additional Duties

  1. Assisting other staff in the collection of field samples, data entry, comparing site specific technical data, and researching applicable regulatory requirements.
  2. Responsible for performing other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education

Working towards a two-year technical diploma or Bachelor's in Environmental Science, Wildlife or Resource Management or related field is required.

Experience

This is an entry-level position with a great opportunity to gain experience in many different environmental disciplines including water, air, wildlife, reclamation, waste management, and more. No prior environmental field experience working in an industrial, government or scientific community is necessary, however prior experience would be considered an asset. On-the-job training and feedback will be provided to help you be successful.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  4. Ability to operate or willingness to learn to operate all terrain and four wheel drive vehicles in a variety of environmental conditions.
  5. Love of the outdoors and adventurous spirit.
  6. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
  7. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  8. Knowledge of Alberta’s Flora and Fauna.
  9. Ability to use map & compass and GPS units/Avenza Maps.
  10. Excellent communication skills.
  11. Problem-solving skills and ability to think quickly and be flexible.
  12. Maintain a Class 5 license and ability to maintain certificates for ATV, UTV and snowmobile.

Physical Requirements

The selected candidate will need to be able to:

  1. Handle loads over 20 kg. in weight.
  2. Regularly engage in physical exertion, i.e., shovel, lift and/or carry heavy materials.
  3. Concentrate for over 60 consecutive minutes.
  4. Work in environmental extremes for over 60 consecutive minutes.
  5. Sit for over 60 consecutive minutes.
  6. Listen for quiet sounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The successful candidate will be joining our team with CST and working on site at our Grande Cache Coal Mine. The commute from Grande Cache is approximately 20 km on Highway 40 North. Accommodations through CST Coal may be available.

The chosen candidate will be split between an office setting (approx. 30% of the time) and outdoors (approx. 70% of the time). Due to the nature of the mine site there is potential to be exposed to fire, wildlife, smoke, fumes, odors or chemicals associated with laboratory analysis and rough and steep terrain. Occasional travel may be required outside the work area in order to attend conferences, courses or meetings.

As a condition of employment, the incumbent is required to comply with pre and post-employment drug and alcohol testing as per the Drug and Alcohol Policy. As required, personal protective equipment will include the use of an approved hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots, hearing protection, CSA approved respiratory protection, protective clothing and gloves, personal flotation device, hip waders, goggles and ATV helmet. Vaccinations for rabies, hepatitis and tetanus are required.
