Overview

This position will manage the ongoing maintenance, development, and optimization of injection molding tooling to ensure optimal asset utilization and support activities to ensure sustained, optimal tool performance. The role involves planning, directing, and coordinating Tool Room activities and staff.

Responsibilities

Equipment Health: Develop preventative maintenance programs. Oversee conversions, repairs, preventive maintenance, and inspection of tooling. Set priorities for mold repairs in collaboration with Scheduling. Direct, review, and approve tool design changes to improve current and future mold design for quality parts and optimum cycles. Maintain and regain cavitation to meet monthly objectives; develop and maintain project budgets. Evaluate downtime and efficiency reports.

People: Supervise employees and activities in the Tool Room to support a 24/7 production facility. Plan and maintain maintenance schedules. Provide technical advice and training to production and maintenance personnel. Conduct new hire training and continuous training to improve efficiencies.

CAPEX & Budget Control: Participate in recommending the purchase of new capital equipment, plant layout, production methods, material handling, and parts inventory. Assist in part inventory ordering. Adhere to maintenance spend budget. Issue requests for capital expenses for continued plant product and tool maintenance. Manage expenses for the Tool shop and make recommendations for capital needs. Review new mold development, tooling vendor selection, and negotiate tooling costs.

Support to Other Departments: Assist the Tool Room in making necessary adjustments to maintain product quality. Evaluate downtime and efficiency reports. Establish good working relationships and display strong business aptitude to support plant production and performance goals.

Keep Tool shop personnel informed of pertinent activities and information. Work with vendors on the development of injection tools, fixtures, and molds. Manage costs, evaluate suppliers, and meet deadlines. Review new mold construction and design changes to existing tooling. Drive standardization in tooling design. Apply lean manufacturing tools such as 5S and SMED in the Tool Room.

Support and maintain all company policies, including ISO Standards, Health and Safety Requirements, and Continuous Improvement. Determine the approval for new controlled documents or changes to existing documents. Coordinate with ISO standards for preventative machine maintenance and comply with documented procedures.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED equivalent.
  • Preference given to candidates with advanced degrees or certificates.
  • Prior experience in mold making, industrial tool maintenance, or injection molding.
  • Ability to read technical drawings and prints.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Knowledge of basic measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
  • Previous experience with lathes, mills, grinders, etc. is preferred but not essential.
  • Knowledge of injection mold components, terminology, and their relationships to each other.
