The successful candidate will be responsible for creating and driving innovative corporate claims strategies, anchored in customer experience and aligned to SGI’s vision and values. Identifies and oversees implementation of governance, process, standards, reporting and monitoring across claims functions. Leads team to research, define and implement best practices and continuous improvement to support corporate priorities of operational excellence and sustainable growth while maintaining a national focus in the process design, monitoring and governance of claims handling. Ensures an integrated view with operations, product management and Corporate Underwriting.

Corporate insurance focuses on research, data, competitive intelligence, and industry best practice to set strategy and standards and works in tandem with operational areas to drive strategic execution, opportunities, shareholder value, and customer and partner experience.

Key Accountabilities

Corporate Claims Strategy & Initiatives

  1. Leads the development and oversees execution of claims strategies for claims functions to effectively implement and monitor claims best practices and performance standards.

  2. Participates in establishing training strategies to develop, implement and maintain standardized national claims training ensuring uniform application across multiple jurisdictions.

  3. Collaborates with Business Relationship Managers (BRM) in the development and implementation of corporate claims initiatives.

  4. Oversees research and analysis related to corporate claims handling initiatives or efficiencies and incorporates findings into strategy.

  5. Oversees the intake process for strategic, operational, and cross functional initiatives; from intake to implementation; ensuring all relevant business partners are included in the process.

  6. Prioritizes project opportunities and makes recommendations for approval to meet the corporate claims strategic objectives.

  7. Ensures enhancements and changes have incorporated a change assessment to determine best course of action for implementation.

  8. Ensures data is used to drive strategy development.

  9. Oversees and ensures team is anticipating future needs, seeking new solutions and experiments with new processes and solutions, to shape the future of claims handling.

Corporate Claims Relationships

  1. Collaborates with Claims Operations leadership teams and other internal and external partners to lead the development and implementation of effective and consistent claims handling models in all applicable regions.

  2. Understands and supports the relationships with national partners that support growth, customer, and operational excellence.

  3. Collaborates with Claims Operations leadership team and Corporate Claims Partnerships to ensure established partnerships are managed consistently across jurisdictions in accordance with standards.

  4. Builds relationships with external regulatory groups impacting the insurance industry as it relates claims handling.

  5. Collaborates with operations and legal to ensure internal teams have incorporated changes in legislation, regulations and policies into corporate claim standards and processes and implemented into Claims Operations.

  6. Collaborates with Corporate Analytics to develop and maintain claims reporting for monitoring corporate and operational performance and support claims initiatives.

  7. Collaborates with Product Management, Corporate Underwriting, and Corporate Auto Fund to provide input on impacts to claims handling related to new or enhanced product offerings or underwriting standards and processes.

  8. Provides advice and guidance regarding significantly complex or contentious claims escalated from branches, brokers, other internal departments, and the general public.

  9. Ensures Claims Operations leadership team and Corporate Claims Training have addressed technical training needs for operational staff.

  10. Supports business operations as a trusted partner to remove barriers, initiate change or adjust direction to ensure that the organization is adding value for customers, partners, and employees.

Corporate Claims Product Standardization & Monitoring

  1. Oversees the development and implementation of a claims standards program to establish consistent and standard approaches to claims management.

  2. Oversees the establishment and monitoring of claims process workflows to standardize and optimize workflow of operations and partners, automation, and workload optimization and planning, claims process maps for all transaction types, and customer experience.

  3. Oversees the monitoring of claims standards to ensure claims policies and guidelines are effectively executed, training needs are identified and acted upon, and customer expectations are reflected.

  4. Monitors changes in the corporation as well as the insurance industry as it relates to regulations, claims handling and best practices.

Corporate Claims Quality Assurance & Training

  1. Oversees the development of a quality assurance (QA) strategy and framework for Corporate Claims and Claims Operations.

  2. Oversees the development of a continuous improvement framework for Corporate Claims and the ongoing maintenance of the framework.

  3. Oversees the development and execution of claims training requirements, provide oversight to claims training programs, ensure training program effectiveness and continuous improvement.

  4. Oversees collaboration with Claims Operations to determine systems and equipment needs and coordinates with internal or external partners to ensure an efficient implementation of the systems and equipment.

  5. Oversees the development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of the Three Lines of Defense Model to manage risks within Claims Operations.

  6. Provides strategic oversight to the establishment, monitoring, and review of internal control and regulatory compliance programs.

People Leadership

  1. Builds a high performing workforce by actively leading human resource activities.

  2. Ensures development of divisional succession plans.

  3. Builds a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver on strategic and corporate strategies, ensuring integration with employee performance development and career development plans.

Corporate Management

  1. Ensures programs and policies are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies.

  2. Manages risk in area of authority.

  3. Prepares, reviews, manages and/or approves departmental/divisional budgets.

  4. Prepares decision requests, decision and/or information items and/or SGI board items.

  5. Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility, including development, implementation and managing of program components specific to departmental health and safety requirements.

  6. Makes decisions for departmental operations that are efficient, effective and in alignment with strategic direction and priorities.

  7. Ensures department and program policies, procedures and guidelines are in compliance with applicable federal and provincial legislation and regulations; implements and evaluates changes to legislation and regulations in area of authority.

  8. Establishes and maintains an effective system of internal controls to support reliable financial reporting and compliance in accordance with applicable laws and regulations within the span of control and communicates the importance of internal controls to staff.

Education and Experience

  1. A four-year degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such as Business, Mathematics & Applied Science or Social Sciences.

  2. Twelve years of experience comprised of eight years of leadership with progressively challenging responsibility and four years’ experience in a technical insurance role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Ability to develop, articulate and execute strategy.

  2. Ability to understand and leverage data from multiple sources to drive decision making.

  3. Knowledge of the insurance industry, products, and competitors.

  4. Knowledge of organizational units, and how they interact to support the corporation’s operations.

  5. Knowledge of project management methodologies and techniques required to plan, manage and execute projects.

  6. Ability to collaborate and build support to drive change.

  7. Ability to write high-quality reports that are clear, concise, and targeted to the audience.

  8. Ability to prepare and deliver effective presentations.

  9. Ability to analyze and research complex issues or opportunities until resolved.

Pay Range: $137,715.00 - $183,633.00
