Job description

The Canadian Centre for Child Protection is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented legal assistant/paralegal to join our team. In this role, you will provide essential support to the legal team and the organization in areas such as contract management, corporate record keeping, court submissions, targeted legal research, and overall legal file management. This position is ideal for a passionate individual who is committed to contributing to the protection of children and has a strong foundation in legal and administrative processes and document management.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Report directly to General Counsel and Associate General Counsel and serve as an integral part of the legal team.
  2. Prepare legal documents, including contracts, releases, affidavits, and community and victim impact statement submissions for courts across Canada.
  3. Explain common contractual terms and conditions to management and interested parties.
  4. Ensure all deadlines and conditions described on contracts are met (e.g., payments and filing of reports), and assist legal staff in maintaining language standards for existing and new contracts and identifying linkages across contracts.
  5. Perform legal research to support ongoing cases and initiatives, including case law and legislative monitoring tasks (training provided).
  6. Draft, review, and prepare additional legal documents as needed, ensuring compliance with applicable formalities.
  7. Assist in the preparation and filing of legal reports, briefs, and other necessary documentation.
  8. Perform general administrative duties such as open, update (including data entry and scanning of documentation), organize, maintain, and close legal files (both paper and electronic); prepare correspondence, conduct due diligence searches, manage corporate filings, diarize key dates, set up meetings, presentations and calls for all legal staff, and maintain contract management and file systems.
  9. Work closely with legal staff to ensure timely completion of legal processes and coordination with a wide range of interested parties.

Skills and Qualifications

  1. Minimum of one year of experience in a legal assistant, paralegal, contract administrator, or contract manager role.
  2. Completion of a legal assistant or paralegal program (or equivalent level of experience in a law firm or legal environment) is an asset.
  3. Prior work experience as a Contract Administrator, Contract Manager or relevant role; and/or a degree in business administration or equivalent is also an asset.
  4. Strong knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, and documentation standards.
  5. Excellent research, analytical, and organizational skills.
  6. Proficiency in legal research tools and Microsoft Office Suite.
  7. Strong verbal and written communication skills with high attention to detail.
  8. Ability to work independently and handle sensitive information with the utmost confidentiality.
  9. Ability to work with and support varying seniority levels, including staff, managers, and external contacts.
  10. Proficiency in using Lexis-Nexis, CanLII, Westlaw and other legal research sites is considered an asset.
  11. Experience with a legal practice management system is an asset.
