Job description

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW, LEADERSHIP FOR THE ECOZOIC,
DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY, MCGILL UNIVERSITY

Anthropology for the Ecozoic (A4E), housed in the Department of Anthropology at McGill University, invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position. A4E is a node of the inter-university Leadership for the Ecozoic (L4E) initiative and collaborates closely with the Ecological Economics node housed at the University of Vermont (UVM).

This position is intended for an early-career scholar with a PhD in anthropology or a related field. The ideal candidate will conduct original place-based research that has the potential to transform the way we think about and intervene in human-Earth relationships. We encourage applicants whose research integrates diverse disciplines and fields (e.g., philosophy, social theory and ethics; economics and law; visual and other experimental modes of ethnographic representation; the environmental humanities).

The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to work with L4E-affiliated faculty and PhD students in the Department of Anthropology at McGill University. Foci include, but are not limited to, the Territories of Life initiative associated with the Centre for Indigenous Conservation and Development Alternatives (CICADA) and the exploration of alternative modes of ethnography associated with the Critical Media Lab. We anticipate that the Postdoctoral Fellow will participate in L4E activities such as courses and seminars, outreach and communications, retreats, meetings, and workshops, which may also include the Ecological Economics node at UVM. We offer up to two years of an annual salary of 60,000 CAD plus benefits and access to up to 5,000 CAD for research activities. Expected start date is August 27, 2025.

Eligibility:
Competitive candidates will have a strong research record, a keen interest in interdisciplinary work, and fit well with L4E’s commitment to planetary transformation. Applicants must have the PhD in hand by August 27, 2025, and have received their degree no earlier than August 27, 2022. Women and people from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Application:
Applicants should familiarize themselves with Anthropology for the Ecozoic, the L4E Strategic Plan, and, more broadly, the L4E website. Send a cover letter, CV, research proposal, and completed Recruitment Questionnaire to Dina Spigelski(dina.spigelski@mcgill.ca); with a copy to Eduardo Kohn(eduardo.kohn@mcgill.ca) by January 31, 2025.
