Occupational Therapist - Clinical Seating and Neuromotor (ON, Toronto)

THE POSITION

We are seeking an occupational therapist for a regular full-time position within the Neuromotor and Clinical Seating teams. This position is split as follows:

1. 0.5FTE Clinical Seating - Assesses for assistive technology to meet the seating, wheeled mobility and positioning needs of clients with wide range of complexities.
2. 0.5FTE Neuromotor - Works with children who have neuromotor disorders such as cerebral palsy providing assessment, consultation and intervention.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

General

1. Follows occupational therapist’s practice standards, policies, and procedures established by the regulatory College and Holland Bloorview.
2. Provides direct service, consultation, and education to client, family and community providers with the focus on domains of practice relevant to occupational therapy.
3. Partners with clients and families to formulate and implement individualized client-centered goals with focused, targeted and measurable outcomes.
4. Provides client care in collaboration with the client/family to plan, implement and evaluate care, documenting according to hospital policies.
5. Demonstrates strong critical thinking/reasoning and utilizes research to establish and support evidence-informed practice.
6. Incorporates evaluative activities into professional practice to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective health care.
7. Promotes and support the physical, psychosocial and spiritual wellbeing of patients and families.
8. Participates in quality improvement initiatives such as quality boards, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices.
9. Documents workload statistics according to the Ministry of Health.
10. Other duties as assigned.

Clinical Seating

1. Assesses for assistive technology to meet the seating, wheeled mobility and positioning needs of clients in collaboration with clients/families, therapists, and vendors.
2. Provides education, both formal and informal, to clients/families, colleagues, students and other professionals within the organization and community with regards to seating and mobility.
3. Provides direct service, consultation, and education to client, family and community providers with the focus domains of practice relevant to occupational therapy/physiotherapy.

Neuromotor

1. Interfaces and problem solve with members of the interprofessional care team and community providers as appropriate to ensure an integrated approach to care.
2. Utilizes the teaching/learning process to provide education on various conditions, both formal and informal, to clients/families, colleagues, students, and other professionals within the organization and the community.
3. Provides direct service (individual and/or group), consultation, mediation and education to clients, families, and community providers with focus on maximizing the client’s physical functioning.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Minimum of bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy required; master’s degree preferred.
2. Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario required.
3. Membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists and/or the Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists an asset.
4. Experience working in the healthcare field, preferably with children/youth who have a disability.
5. Current ADP Registered Authorizer Number (Mobility) required for Wheelchairs (Manual) and positioning aids and Wheelchairs (Power) and positioning aids.
6. Demonstrated knowledge in seating, mobility and positioning devices and funding resources is required.
7. Experience with children with cerebral palsy or neuromotor conditions an asset.
8. Knowledge of and skills in occupational therapy assessment techniques and treatment of children and youth with a variety of conditions.
9. Knowledge of and experience with occupational therapy assessment techniques, therapeutic skills, modalities and their applications.
10. Experience with current outcome measures (i.e. Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, Goal Attainment Scaling).
11. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and in a solution-focused manner with clients, families and members of the interprofessional care team.
12. Written and verbal English language communication skills required to effectively communicate with clients, families and members of the interdisciplinary team.
13. Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues involved with client/family in order to be an effective member of an inter-professional team.
14. Demonstrated commitment to professional development and student education.
15. Experience with being a positive change agent and with quality improvement initiatives is an asset.
16. Proven ability to measure service effectiveness and efficiency.
17. Demonstrated ability to organize time, meet deadlines, and effectively and efficiently manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities.
18. Demonstrated initiative and self-direction.
19. Status appointment in the Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy at University of Toronto is an asset.
