About Us

Pistachio Café is a family-owned business located in downtown Gananoque. In the winter we are a cozy café offering breakfast, lunch and yummy baked goods; in the summer we also feature artisan gelato and operate a patio restaurant and bar. All our offerings are made in-house and are vegetarian.

The Job

This is a full-time permanent position. The Café Manager needs to be able to perform virtually all café functions. The role will be very different in the Summer season (late June to Labour Day) vs. the Winter season (Thanksgiving to Victoria Day). The Spring and Fall shoulder seasons will be a mix of the two roles.

Summer Season

The Café Manager will generally work the later shift from 3pm - close (usually 10:30) and will have overall responsibility for café, restaurant, bar and kitchen operations while on shift. Principal duties during the summer are:

  1. Personnel oversight
    • Participating in the recruiting and hiring process
    • Identifying things that need to be done to deliver the desired customer experience, and assigning to employees (or handling personally)
    • Resolving any staff or customer issues that arise during the shift (kitchen, café, restaurant and bar)
    • Overseeing closing and handling daily cash reconciliation (both registers)
    • Providing constructive feedback to employees as needed
    • Taking disciplinary action in consultation with the owners
  2. Gelato/Sorbet Production (training provided)
    • Creating weekly production schedule to fulfil anticipated sales volumes
    • Overseeing gelato materials inventory and ordering (or arranging for same)
    • Making gelato using methods and recipes provided
    • Maintaining gelato equipment and freezers – daily cleaning and sanitizing, defrosting, other required maintenance per manual
    • Monitoring inventory daily and making additional gelato as needed.
  3. Dinner Service
    • Preparing meals to order for Pasta on the Patio restaurant 2-3 nights a week (weather permitting) – generally from 5 – 9.
    • Support servers as needed by delivering meals, clearing tables and doing dishes.
  4. Swing
    • Filling in in any capacity for missed shifts, volume surges etc.

Winter Season

The Café Manager will be responsible for all front-of-house operations. This entails:

  1. Performing opening tasks
  2. Serving customers, including
    • Preparing beverages (including using the espresso machine)
    • Preparing food orders (ladling soup, grilling sandwiches, smoothies etc.)
    • Portioning and serving gelato (Fall and Spring)
    • Taking payments using the POS system (including discounts, refunds etc)
  3. Ensuring tables are clean, garbage is tidy, and dishes are washed and put away
  4. Putting out garbage and recycling for pickup
  5. Attractively displaying retail items
  6. Answering phone, email and social media enquiries
  7. Monitoring all inventory and ordering supplies in conjunction with the Kitchen Lead
  8. All front-of-house cleaning including servicing washrooms
  9. Performing closing tasks including daily cash reconciliation
  10. Preparing bank deposits at least bi-weekly
  11. Preparing and distributing cash tips per timesheets
  12. Supervision of PT staff
  13. Identifying opportunities to improve the café’s appeal and profitability
  14. Ensuring that all menu items are costed based on recent pricing (to be reviewed at least annually by May 1)
  15. Communicating regularly with owners to provide updates and deal with any issues.
