Summary of Position:

AWC Operations Canada (AWCC) performs many logistics functions including real-time yard management, data transfers, vehicle direct locating, dealer delivery, import/export preparations, rail car preparation and switching, loading and unloading, and extensive assembly plant operations. The AWCC Wolverton, ON facility provides logistics services for Glovis Canada Inc.

Rail Unloaders are responsible for off-loading vehicles from bi-level and/or tri-level rail cars, as well as shuttling vehicles within the AWCC yard.

Essential Functions, Duties and Tasks:

  • Make sure Blue Flag protection is up
  • Enter and exit the train by climbing down the ladder railings on the outside of the rail car
  • Install and raise/lower bridge plates as needed
  • Pull pins/levers to drop the hinge deck lid, when needed
  • Ensure the loading equipment has been properly inspected
  • Disconnect and store chock blocks
  • Drive the vehicle from within the rail car, down a loading ramp
  • Ensure vehicle is scanned for inventory
  • Park the vehicle in designated location with specified requirements
  • Turn the vehicle off and exit without causing damage
  • Check vehicles for any damage and report to Supervisor or Manager
  • Remove bridge plates
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized working environment

Working Conditions:

  • Work conducted outside in all types of weather, including extreme conditions
  • Work at a fast pace in tight spaces
  • Personal Protective Equipment provided includes safety vest, gloves, safety glasses, hard hat, and coveralls

This is a physically demanding position, which requires you to:

  • Ability to get in/out of vehicles with minimal door opening clearance (only 12")
  • Good sense of balance, working at a height of approximately 15 ft. above ground
  • Climbing up or down a ladder on the side of the rail car
  • Carrying & lifting, including above head (chock blocks weigh 3.5-4 kg/8-9 lbs., bridge plates weigh approx. 23 kg/50 lbs.)
  • Reaching (bridge plates are passed from below to overhead)
  • Pushing & pulling (pins on deck lids and securing chock blocks)
  • Gripping (steering wheel, ladder rungs, and ratchet handle)
  • Stoop, crouch, bend (to walk through tri-level rail cars)
  • Kneel, squat, crawl (while working with chock blocks and straps)
  • Sitting (driving vehicle)
  • Standing & Walking (working inside rail cars, walking in the yard)
  • Good visual and hearing ability

Education, Experience, and Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma, or equivalent
  • Minimum 1-year heavy labour experience
  • Ability to drive both automatic and manual transmission vehicles
  • Valid full G driver's license
  • Communicate in English; Ability to read, write and interpret documents
  • Subject to third party Pre-employment Medical Assessment
  • Subject to Background check including Driver's Abstract and Criminal Record Check
