Job Summary:
Centerfire is currently seeking a local, highly skilled, and dedicated individual to join our team as a Regional Health, Safety & Environmental Lead (RHSEL) in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing a team of field safety advisors/admin with our group of companies and implementing the organization’s Health and Safety programs, policies, and procedures across multiple site locations within the RMWB region. Your primary objective will be to lead a team of field level safety advisors and work with the Director of Health & Safety in the ongoing development, monitoring and evaluation of a comprehensive range of employee health and safety programs and services to meet the company’s goals and legal obligations.
The RHSEL is responsible for assisting with maintaining the well-being and safety of employees, customers, and visitors, while also ensuring compliance with applicable health and safety regulations and standards. This is a critical position that requires strong leadership, analytical thinking, and excellent communication skills with proven ability to effectively plan and direct the work of the department and manage its staff and resolve conflict in a positive and constructive manner.
You must be local to the Fort McMurray region.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the development and implementation of the comprehensive corporate HSE management system. Collect and analyze statistical data, produce leading and lagging indicator trends, and ensure the information is accurately collected.
- Assist field safety advisors/admins with day-to-day challenges and questions.
- Oversee any needed hiring of field safety advisor/admin.
- Manage field safety advisor/admin work schedules to ensure adequate coverage is maintained.
- Assist Director of Health & Safety with updating, monitoring safety team responsibilities and evaluating individual performance.
- Confirm occurrence of and participate in regular inspections and audits with all levels of employees of facilities, equipment, and work processes to identify and assess potential hazards or risks.
- Ensuring that all employees receive proper training and education on health and safety practices.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with regulatory authorities, and client stakeholders to ensure compliance and stay informed about changes in health and safety regulations.
- Conduct and assist with incident investigations and near misses, analyzing root causes and implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
- Plan, conduct and participate in annual COR Audits.
- Coordinate active WCB claims and monitor the modified work program.
- Provide guidance and support to regional teams in conducting risk assessments, developing project safety plans, and implementing appropriate control measures.
- Prepare and present reports on health and safety performance metrics, trends, and initiatives to senior management, highlighting areas for improvement and proposing strategies for risk mitigation.
- Work with safety team to conduct training sessions and workshops on various health and safety topics, ensuring that employees have a clear understanding of their responsibilities and the importance of maintaining a safe working environment.
- Assist with maintaining third party prequalification sites, Avetta, ComplyWorks & ISNetworld etc.
- Manage and maintain any safety supplies / PPE required.
Qualifications/Experience:
- High school graduation and completion of a diploma training program at a college or technical school.
- Certification in Health and Safety such as, NCSO, OH&S Diploma, CRSP or a recognized safety designation.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in safety with at least 3+ years’ experience as a health & safety lead/manager.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook) with experience using SharePoint, Teams, and extensive Internet search capabilities.
- Valid CSO, H2S Alive, Standard First Aid, COR Auditor Certificates.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.
- Trade background or additional industrial experience to the above is preferred.
- Safety equipment training / inspection certification preferred.
- Experience with industry recognized root cause analysis systems, DNV SCAT & TapRoot.
- Proven experience as a health and safety professional, with a focus on managing the company safety program and initiatives in a multi-site or regional capacity.
- Strong knowledge of OH&S, and federal health and safety regulations and standards.
- Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to identify potential risks, assess their impact, and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact confidently with employees at all levels of the organization, as well as external stakeholders.
- Strong leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to foster a culture of safety and engage employees in proactive health and safety practices.
- Proactive mindset, with the ability to anticipate and address potential health and safety issues before they arise.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining accurate records and documentation.
- Ability to travel frequently within the RMWB region and occasionally to other locations as needed.
