The Recreation Programmer will plan and coordinate a diverse and evolving portfolio of sport-related programs and events based on the needs of the community and Council Strategic Priorities. Experience engaging with the community and creating programs and events related to sport and physical activity would be an asset. A class 4 license or willingness to obtain would also be an asset.

Our ideal candidates have a passion for delivering public sector excellence by working collaboratively with City staff at all levels to support the delivery of recreation, sport, and physical activity programs and services. This position is also expected to work collaboratively in a team environment identifying new and innovative programs and special events for community participation.

WORK FROM HOME

The successful candidate for this posting may be eligible for participation in a hybrid, work from home arrangement in alignment with the City’s Work from Home Policy. Such arrangements are determined with each employee and subject to change based on operational needs and policy direction.

POSITION FUNCTION

Coordinate and participate in the direct programming of one or more specific program areas and special events within the Recreation and Community Development Division.

KEY DUTIES

  1. Plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate recreation programs and special events such as sports, outdoor recreation, social recreation, fitness, ice, and arts programming.
  2. Draft program information for seasonal brochure distribution and make recommendations on other marketing initiatives.
  3. Provide input to the development of program policies and procedures.
  4. Coordinate the use of facilities and work with facility maintenance to ensure equipment safety.
  5. Maintain and operate within program budget as detailed and make routine program purchases.
  6. Prepare draft budget estimates for specific programs and/or facility areas.
  7. Provide input into capital budget requests for programs and services.
  8. Prepare grant submissions for program enhancements or pilot projects.
  9. Co-ordinate, review and evaluate the work of various program staff (up to 3 FTE) and facilities.
  10. Liaise with various community groups and associations to promote recreation program and services.
  11. Respond to enquiries and complaints from staff and the public/user groups regarding programming and scheduling.

INDEPENDENCE

Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed while in progress. Problems such as changes to budget and programs are taken to supervisor with recommendations.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort: Normal.

Mental Effort: Meet multiple deadlines. (occasional) Short periods of intense concentration while working on computer (often).

Visual/Auditory Effort: Normal.

Work Environment: Recreation facility/community program sites. Work irregular hours.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Organize and prioritize work.
  2. Understand and apply the techniques of municipal recreation program design and delivery.
  3. Working level operation of current City word processing, spreadsheet and related specialty software.
  4. Direct the work of assistants.
  5. Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  6. Represent the City to the public and outside agencies.
  7. Work safely.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

  1. College Diploma in Recreation Leisure studies or related field. (2 years)
  2. Required to obtain criminal record clearance
  3. Standard First Aid (20 hours)
  4. CPR Level C (8 hours)

Experience: 2 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER: May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
