Ocean Career: Planetary Hydrogen Marine Chemist

Planetary Technologies’ vision is to protect and restore the ocean and climate for generations to come. We do this by enhancing the ocean’s natural ability to fight climate change through carbon dioxide removal and storage.

Our team combines expertise in ocean science, metallurgy and geochemistry to safely and effectively scale up ocean-based CO2 management solutions. Working collaboratively with all of our stakeholders, we develop a cost effective and sustainable set of tools aimed at protecting and restoring our oceans and climate, ultimately doing carbon dioxide removal and storage at gigaton scale.

We are leaders, scientists, and engineers working together to collectively embody our values: respect, curiosity & creativity, accept responsibility, and win for all.

Planetary is hiring a Marine Chemist to work in Halifax/ Dartmouth to help us rigorously test samples and run experiments that help to further prove the safety and efficacy of ocean alkalinity enhancement in our fight against climate change.

Core Responsibilities

  • Help to find short and long term alkalinity sources by rigorously testing potential and existing alkalinity sources.
  • Manage and expedite the testing of multiple samples to accurately track the efficacy of our OAE Process.
  • Establish commercial testing procedures that allow for the consistent quantification of the impact of various alkalinity sources on OAE and effluent characteristics.
  • Run pilot experiments at Dalhousie University’s Aquatron.
  • Establish and maintain key relationships with scientific entities (universities, government labs, private labs, etc.) at each project site to implement MRV while improving scientific credibility and community trust.
  • Maintain and enhance the interdisciplinary project work with other departments within the company.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with industrial partners including laboratories, equipment vendors and other service providers.

About You

  • Have extensive laboratory experience ideally in the field of marine carbonate chemistry.
  • Hold a BSc in marine science or a related discipline.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, quality-controlling, and interpreting oceanographic data, particularly in the field of carbonate chemistry.
  • Personable, good communicator, willing to take lead and responsibilities.
  • Experience conducting oceanographic fieldwork, and a willingness to participate in fieldwork both in the Halifax region and potentially abroad.
  • Have an optimistic, persistent and driven working style.
  • Have experience with ocean modeling (e.g. using research community tools, CO2SYS, Delft3D, MIKE, CORMIX, etc.) or are eager to learn these skills and disciplines.
  • You are curious about climate change technologies and are passionate about protecting our world for future generations.
  • Must be located in Halifax/ Dartmouth area and have access to transportation to Dalhousie University.
