As the Mortgage Underwriter, you will play a key role in analyzing and underwriting credit submissions from the Mobile Mortgage Specialists and External Brokers. You will provide recommendations on qualified loans while exercising good judgment in balancing risk with corporate production goals. You’ll act as a primary resource for Coast Capital Savings (CCS) mobile partners and provide guidance on credit risk assessment, deal structure, and overall presentation.
This is a 6-month Fixed-Term position with the possibility of extension.
What you’ll get to do:
- Provide coaching, training, and mentorship to peers, encouraging and providing cross-sharing of knowledge and on-the-job experience among team members and between teams.
- Manage the relationship building process with the Mobile Mortgage Specialists and External Brokers to ensure a consistent and high level of service delivery.
- Work with the sales team to ensure:
- Superior member experience.
- Innovation/Growth within Retail Credit Department and CCS, looking for innovative ways to meet the members' credit needs and ensure a positive/successful customer experience while still applying sound credit to your decisions.
- Operational Excellence within Retail Credit Department and CCS.
- Remain current on industry trends and latest frauds in the market to mitigate CCS risk when approving credit.
- Monitor risk and pricing trends in loan applications to make recommendations for changes to policy to ensure production, risk, and profitability are balanced.
- Become competent/comfortable with Filogix and Link Lender.
- Maintain a good understanding of external product providers (i.e., CMHC, Genworth, CRI, etc.).
- Ensure compliance with CCS lending guidelines, corporate lending policies, and external partner requirements when underwriting loans.
- Recommend application and/or variance authority, providing sound rationale/support when applicable.
- Review and assess all documentation, calculations for accuracy/authenticity as part of the underwriting process, including updating CALMS application to reflect supporting documentation received.
- Communicate approval via CALMS/Lending Highway to Mobile Mortgage Specialists or prepare and issue commitment letters via Filogix/Link Lender to External Brokers.
- Coordinate with Fulfillment Branch lender to ensure Fulfillment Instructions are clear and sent in a timely manner.
- Package documents and send to Lending Operations in a timely manner.
- Work closely with the Mobile Mortgage Specialists and External Brokers to coach on deal structure and restructuring as necessary to support CCS philosophy of “Improving the Financial Well Being of Our Members” while being mindful of maintaining good risk practices.
- Communicate decisions within defined service level agreements.
Who are we looking for?
- A minimum of 4 years of lending experience, with good knowledge of all aspects of Retail Lending (e.g., specialty lending, progressive lending, and unsecured/partially secured).
- High School Diploma plus completion of a Diploma Program in Business Administration or related field (two years of formal education or equivalent).
- Thorough understanding of CALMS and the Lending Highway.
- Proficiency with T24 Banking system as it relates to lending products and demand accounts.
- Proficiency with PCs and MS Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Experience working with Filogix/Link Lender is an asset.
- Exposure to Mobile Mortgage Specialist and External Broker applications is required.
- Proven organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and multi-task.
- Willingness to work on a team in a busy, ever-changing, and occasionally stressful environment.
- Expert interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate respectfully and effectively in both oral and written form.
- Ability to underwrite deals without dealing directly with the borrower.
- Ability to assess the reliability of information provided in support of applications.
- Ability to detect fraud or illegal activity whether it pertains to the income, documentation, or collateral.
- Ability to represent CCS’ interests professionally and confidently with third parties, when required.
- Ability to solve complex applications and/or situations while ensuring a positive member experience (regardless of the final credit decision).
