Responsibilities of the Director, Pensions Finance

Leadership and Management

  • Provide leadership to the Client Payments & Taxation and Trust Fund Accounting teams.
  • Support and back-up the Director of Corporate Finance, and oversee corporate functions such as Facilities, as required.
  • Lead change initiatives, ensure staff adaptability, establish relationships across divisions, and provide subject-level expertise in committees and projects.
  • Lead a high-performing, collaborative finance team to deliver value-added processes and business advisory services.

Financial Operations and Controls

  • Establish and monitor an effective system of internal controls.
  • Lead initiatives aimed at improving financial performance and operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the organization’s risks and opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation and government reporting requirements.
  • Oversee pension plan contributions and payment processes in accordance with relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee payments and risks associated with payments to pensioners outside of Canada.
  • Design and implement processes to ensure accurate source deductions on payments.
  • Respond immediately to unusual issues; problem-solve and escalate as necessary to ensure accurate and timely pay runs.
  • Liaise with other business areas and communicate issues and updates effectively.
  • Effectively and efficiently manage and analyze large volumes of data to identify risks.
  • Understand calculations within the pension benefits administration system; manage the impacts of system and process changes on pension payments.

Tax Compliance and Financial Reporting

  • Manage external tax reporting processes, including tax slips and tax filings, ensuring accuracy and compliance with CRA timelines.
  • Oversee regulatory filings and remittances for each pension plan.
  • Provide oversight of pension plans’ financials, including consolidation, ensuring quality reporting and timelines are maintained.

Treasury Management

  • Oversee multiple bank accounts.
  • Manage banking relationships, troubleshooting, and escalating errors as needed.
  • Oversee cash receipts, collections, cash transfers between plans, overpayments, foreign exchange, and financing arrangements.
  • Forecast cash requirements for each plan, monitor cash balances, and ensure strong cash management practices.

What you bring

  • Canadian Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) designation, including a specialization in Assurance and Tax.
  • 10 years of directly related management experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), Canadian Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS), Income Tax Act (ITA), and best practices.
  • Audit experience in a medium-to-large accounting firm.
  • Experience in the banking industry, pension, or benefit environment considered an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills, strong interpersonal, research, and analytical skills, and the ability to build sustainable relationships with personnel at all levels of the organization, including key stakeholders and senior management.
  • Strong leadership and team skills, in a complex environment, demonstrated ability to take ownership of opportunities and issues, with superior negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions based on financial and economic analysis and a strong sense of personal and business integrity with a commitment to ethical business behavior.
