DIRECTOR OF THE SCHOOL OF POPULATION AND GLOBAL HEALTH AND ASSOCIATE DEAN, FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCES

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) at McGill University invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor for the School of Population and Global Health (SPGH). The successful candidate will be a dynamic, innovative, and inclusive leader who will serve as the Director of the School of Population and Global Health and Associate Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Preference will be given to candidates with strong records of experience in research, teaching, and leadership. A tenure-stream position may be available for the selected candidate.

The School of Population and Global Health was established in 2016, with the union of existing units, programs, and centres with strengths in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public and Global Health, Ethics, Environmental Health, and Policy. The School is comprised of three departments: the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health (EBOH); the Department of Equity, Ethics, and Policy (DEEP); and the Department of Global and Public Health (DGPH). It includes 83 ranked academic staff and 183 associate members, adjunct professors, and affiliate members from a wide range of disciplines. The SPGH is also home to 317 graduate students and 27 staff members, yielding a powerhouse of internationally-leading research across multiple fundamental disciplines and providing a range of undergraduate and graduate training programs.

The School offers multiple graduate programs, including M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree programs in Epidemiology and in Biostatistics, M.Sc. in Public Health, M.Sc. and M.A. specializations in Biomedical Ethics, and M.Sc. (Applied) in Occupational Health. The School also oversees the medical residency program in public health and preventive medicine. In addition to training graduate students, SPGH faculty teach in the medical school and other health professional schools and are developing an innovative B.A. in Global Health. The School boasts a Pandemic Preparedness Laboratory and a new Centre for Climate Change and Health. Faculty members are among the most accomplished in their fields and have strong links with other McGill affiliated academic units, including the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) and its Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation, the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology of the Lady Davis Research Institute (JGH), the Centre on Population Dynamics, and provincial, national, and international scholarly, governmental, and non-governmental organizations.

Job Description

Under a new Director, the School will further strengthen its presence in Quebec, while continuing to build up world-class multidisciplinary research, top-notch educational programs, and cutting-edge applied work in population and global health. The School will develop and disseminate the evidence base for effective interventions and policies to protect and enhance the health and well-being of individuals and populations in Quebec, Canada, and globally. As an overarching entity, the School under its Director will bring together other units across McGill, and a wide range of partner organizations to meet local and global health challenges.

The Director will be part of the senior leadership team of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, advising the Dean on matters related to the School. Overseeing and working closely with the Chairs of the School’s constituent departments, the Director will coordinate strategic planning and prioritization, be involved in fundraising, assure excellent internal and external communications to build and strengthen the School community, and be responsible for the stewardship of budget and space.

General Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with department chairs, and in alignment with Faculty and University strategic plans, set the strategic goals and priorities of the School of Population and Global Health and assure their effective implementation;
  • Promote an inclusive and collaborative culture to take full advantage of the multidisciplinary strengths and opportunities within the School;
  • Build collaborative links across the Faculty and the University, and with McGill-affiliated hospital-based research institutes;
  • Work with the Faculty’s leadership to optimally allocate space, administrative support, and other resources within the School;
  • Assure a collegial internal governance structure is in place to meet the School’s goals;
  • In collaboration with department chairs, establish priorities for new faculty recruitment and oversee equity-compliant search and selection processes, in conjunction with the Vice Dean, Academic Affairs;
  • Support department chairs in assuring the career development and mentorship of faculty members across all career stages and profiles.

Educational Responsibilities

  • Position the School as a magnet for top students from Quebec, the rest of Canada, and internationally;
  • In collaboration with department chairs, promote excellence and innovation in the School’s educational programs at all levels, while assuring that programs meet Faculty, University, and external accreditation standards;
  • Seek opportunities to teach cross-cutting competencies and enhance interdisciplinarity across programs in the School.

Research Responsibilities

  • Promote activities that ensure and augment the School’s excellence and reputation for nationally-and internationally-leading research;
  • Ensure that the research programs within the School are aligned with the FMHS Strategic Research Plan;
  • Represent or delegate a representative of the School on the Faculty’s Standing Committee on Research (SCoR) and other committees at the University, as appropriate;
  • Work closely with the Scientific Directors of the hospital-based research institutes and the leadership of the School of Medicine, the School of Biomedical Sciences, the Ingram School of Nursing, the School of Physical and Occupational Therapy, and the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders to promote translational research and collaboration;
  • Facilitate the development of large-scale interdisciplinary grant proposals;
  • Collaborate with provincial, national, and international partners to develop and disseminate the evidence base for effective interventions and policies to prevent, protect and enhance the health and well-being of individuals and populations in Quebec, Canada, and globally.

Other Responsibilities

  • Pursue new revenue sources to support the activities of the School, including through fundraising, large grants, and external partnerships;
  • Foster relationships with alumni and external stakeholders;
  • Foster relationships with student representatives/associations;
  • Ensure that the School engages with and reflects the communities it serves;
  • As an Associate or Full Professor, the incumbent will be expected to maintain a successful scholarly career.

Term

The Director and Associate Dean position has a 5-year term and is renewable.

Qualifications

Candidate must:

  • Hold a Ph.D. and/or MD, or equivalent degree;
  • Be an Associate or Full Professor;
  • Be an outstanding scholar in a field of study related to population and global health;
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to education;
  • Have a track record of effective leadership and management;
  • Have a record of accomplishment in research, classroom teaching, graduate supervision, and service to the scholarly community;
  • The ability to communicate in both English and French, or the willingness to achieve such proficiency is expected;
  • A record of success in complex multidisciplinary institutional environments will be considered an asset. MD applicants who intend to practice clinically must be licensed, or eligible for licensure in the province of Quebec. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
