About the Director of Software Engineering role
As the Director of Software Engineering - Financial Products, at Float, you will be responsible for leading and scaling our Financial Products Engineering group. You’ll shape the technical strategy and contribute to the overall product roadmap, working cross-functionally with teams in engineering, design, product, marketing, risk, and partnerships. This role requires you to grow a high-performing team, foster innovation, and deliver top-tier financial products that meet our customers' needs.
In this role you will:
- Lead the strategic direction of the Financial Products engineering team, leveraging our team with expertise in the technical and commercial aspects of the financial products domain.
- Recruit and develop top talent to scale the engineering group to deliver best in class products now and in the future.
- Shape technical roadmaps and product vision by collaborating closely with leadership across engineering, product, design, marketing, risk, and commercial teams.
- Oversee technical decision-making to ensure the scalability, performance, and security of our financial products.
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement, delivering high-quality, reliable software on time and within budget.
- Establish and implement best practices in engineering processes and development methodologies.
You’ll be great in this role if:
- You’ve got the experience. You’ve led and scaled engineering teams for 8+ years, preferably in the fintech space. Experience with SaaS and financial products is a significant advantage. You’ve built out a function at an early-stage startup and are excited to do it all again.
- You are an excellent cross-functional communicator. You effortlessly connect with any team in an org, especially Product, Risk, Compliance, and Software Engineering. You possess astute influencing skills, and you have the ability to bring multiple stakeholders together and problem-solve between various groups. You are a skilled listener who is able to understand and synthesize diverse perspectives and opinions.
- You are motivated by being a leader. You’ve led a team before, and you're excited to continue to provide guidance and mentorship. You set a high bar for yourself and others, and enjoy fostering a culture of excellence and tenacity.
- You’re a strategic thinker. You can create a vision, and you know how to execute it. You prioritize following a data-driven metrics approach. You can establish what needs to be done today vs what will be done tomorrow (getting into the weeds and focusing on taking small steps day to day).
- You’re results-oriented. You set goals, and have a reputation for smashing them. You also have a one team mentality, working with key partners in the business to help Float as a company win vs just your direct team. You are ready to roll-up your sleeves to get building and create immediate impact.
- You’re an owner. You take complete ownership and accountability of delivery and outcomes. You translate business requirements into technical specifications, overseeing the development process, and ensuring successful deployment. You are ready and willing to make tough decisions to achieve broader business goals and outcomes.
- You’ve got an understanding of the market. You’ve worked with accounting/finance related products, or have worked closely with finance leaders. You’re commercially focused with an understanding of the market and the business we’re in. You’re no stranger to an ROI mindset.
This role won’t be a fit if:
- You're not driven by the vision of building Canada's top business finance platform.
- You prefer predictable routines over the dynamic, independent nature of startup culture.
- You aren't comfortable working independently, remotely, or asynchronously.
- You aren’t a team player.
- Resilience and openness to direct feedback aren't your strengths.
- You aren’t comfortable taking calculated risks.
- You have an ego.
- You like to play politics.
Don’t meet every single requirement? If you’re excited about this role, and you strongly align with our values but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be the right candidate for this, or other future positions.
