Job description

The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is a member of the Maa-nulth Treaty Society and, through the Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement, is a modern treaty Nation operating with a government-to-government relationship with Canada and the province of British Columbia. As a Self-Governing Indigenous Government, the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government continues to promote education and community programs that enhance Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ identity.

Position Summary

Reporting to the President, the Director of Operations is responsible for providing the leadership, direction and overall management of the administration and operating affairs of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government. This includes policy development and administration, human resource management, financial management, projects and programs, and the development and management for formal plans, strategies and goals in support of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government.

A collaborative and trustworthy leader, the Director of Operations will perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with all Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government laws, rules, policies, standards and procedures as a modern treaty government as a member of the Maa-nulth Treaty Society and via the Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement, and as directed by the Executive. They will maintain confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government and will be an approachable, communicative leader who is committed to working collectively with other departments and treaty Nations.

The Director of Operations is responsible for providing policy leadership and overall policy direction to personnel, the Personnel Committee and the Executive, and for providing the overall leadership and management of the Administration, including personnel, hiring, management, standards, programs, and operations.

Qualifications

Training, Education and Experience

  • Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization in Business Administration, Management, Public Administration, or a combination of equivalent education and experience relevant to the position.
  • Extensive knowledge of First Nation Modern Treaty governments in British Columbia
  • Minimum of 5 years’ senior management or executive experience working in a complex government organization.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Highly developed knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, history and governance.
  • Extensive experience working in or with Indigenous communities or municipal governments.
  • Genuine respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ traditions, culture, and protocols.
  • Experience developing and implementing strategic and operation plans.
  • Solid understanding of financial management and risk management processes.
  • Ability to prioritize as well as be adaptable to changing priorities as necessary.
  • Maintain high level of confidentiality in the handling of information.
  • Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and coaching skills, with the ability to work with staff at all levels and backgrounds and build trusting relationships. Ability to negotiate and influence at all levels.
  • The ability to streamline and continuously improve various organizational processes.
  • Highly refined respectful communication skills, within the organization, with community and external partners, via different mediums (email, presentation, zoom, etc.).
  • Ability to resolve conflict with internal/external clients with ability to display emotional resilience.
  • Ability to cultivate genuine & solid relationships both internally and externally.
  • Ability to withstand pressure on an on-going basis with competing demands and projects.
  • Understanding and keeping up to date with all relevant legislation.
  • Proficiency in using computers: Microsoft 365, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and various video conferencing platforms.
  • Must have valid driver license (BC Class 5) and satisfactory driving record.
  • Satisfactory criminal records check.

  • We offer a competitive annual salary ($130,000.00 – $170,000.00 per annum) and commensurate with your experience for this role.
