North America Construction (1993) Ltd. – NAC Constructors Ltd. (NAC) is well known for our expertise in water and wastewater construction across Canada. Our self-performing team of almost 500 skilled professionals and experts in trades and engineering, comprehensively handles projects, from conceptualization to delivery. The Director of Field Operations is responsible for the strategic planning, oversight, and execution of field operations for all projects nationwide. This role involves directly managing Project Superintendents and Managers overseeing self-perform work across Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical disciplines.

Additionally, the Director plays a key role in the success of NAC projects, ensuring efficient field operations and providing regular progress reports to the Executive Team. As a Senior Management Team member, they contribute to developing NAC’s priorities and strategic objectives.

This position will also hold key duties in the formulation of innovative production and workforce execution strategies, creating productive and sustainable relations through partnerships, clients, and suppliers. Additional duties will include the achievement of budget targets in both revenue and department expense categories. To this end, the Director of Field Operations will display leadership and support the safety & quality requirements for NAC.

Position Duties:
  • Assume overall responsibility for field productivity and workforce aspects of the company, including tracking productivity and labour results.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of field staff.
  • Responsible for development and maintenance of various systems to manage labour tracking.
  • Provide vision and leadership that encourages growth and safeguards the assets and financial viability of the company.
  • Demonstrate and encourage teamwork and cooperation with all members of the operations and support groups.
  • Ensure that the division complies with all company and government regulations regarding the proper treatment of employees and a safe work environment.
  • Work with senior management and accounting staff to establish annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Provide written and verbal reports on operations on an ongoing basis and other written reports as requested.
  • Establish, with the assistance of the VP of Operations, certain performance goals such as cost code profits and productivity and report on those goals.
  • Implement corporate policies, procedures, and organizational structure for assigned operating unit within the framework of corporate policy.
  • Provide support to any number of projects from an operational, financial and resource standpoint.
  • Assist in the establishment, and ensure compliance of operational units' short-term and long-term goals with overall corporate objectives.
  • Oversee the organization's budget process; establish timelines; provide support to the management team; hold the management team accountable for the process.
  • Plan, staff, and supervise all assigned work unit activities through subordinate managers to ensure a cohesive operational unit.
  • Provide advice, guidance, and direction to subordinate managers toward their professional development.
  • Coordinate and confer with professional staff to resolve operating problems and difficulties and authorize department operational procedures within the corporate framework.
  • Coordinate with the Vice President to monitor the construction activities of North America Construction (1993) Ltd (NAC).
  • Identify and analyze information to give early warnings of potential problems and recommend corrective action.
  • Oversee, support hiring processes, timesheets, expense reimbursement, etc.
  • Act, as needed, in the absence of the Vice President.
  • Oversee compliance within the department regarding (NAC)'s Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual, and recommend additions to, and/or modification of, the manual and other operating guidance of North America Construction (1993) Ltd (NAC), as part of the Senior Management Team.
  • Manage, in conjunction with the Senior Management Team, scheduling and performance of annual employee performance reviews.
  • Position has primary profit/loss responsibility for assigned operational units.
  • Perform additional assignments as required by the needs of the operational unit, company, or as directed by the Vice President, Operations.
  • Negotiate contracts and service level agreements for third-party suppliers and/or service providers.
  • Communicate the organization’s safety policies in accordance with applicable federal and provincial safety standards and local laws.
  • Execute applicable corporate and business operational plans.
  • Promote the mission and values of the organization both internally and externally, as well as oversee the adherence to values and mission.
  • Assess operational issues in regard to competitiveness, staying current in terms of construction trends and innovations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and promote, the company mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behaviour.
  • Collaborate with the Controller or Chief Finance Officer to maintain cost codes and general A/P, A/R, and profit/loss reports performance levels.
  • Communicate with internal representatives to complete job duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field, along with significant experience in construction, project management and leadership.
  • Extensive experience in the management of construction segments.
  • 10 years of progressively responsible experience with at least 3 years in management.
  • Demonstrated management, negotiating and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team and achieve results.
  • Experience in budgeting, project management, and supervision of operations and people.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Able to prioritize and focus associates on appropriate tasks.
  • Proficient with word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret financial documents and spreadsheets.
  • Work well under pressure and makes deadlines.
  • Work effectively in an entrepreneurial, collaborative environment, and is able to direct and work in harmony with a diverse group of highly motivated and capable individuals.
  • Demonstrated relationship-building skills.

  • Must be comfortable and competent in a range of venues when there is a need to represent the organization at the request, or in the absence, of the Vice President.
