Position: Director of Engineering

Job Summary:

The Director of Engineering is responsible for managing and actively participating in all maintenance and engineering operations within the hotel, ensuring the functionality, safety, and appearance of the property. This role is essential to upholding Hard Rock’s high standards, as it combines hands-on work with leadership of a dedicated team focused on preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and efficient facility management. The Director will also play a critical role in health & safety, overseeing compliance and training team members across departments to ensure a safe environment for all guests and staff.

Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position, with days and hours of work aligned with business needs and hotel operations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Operational Excellence & Facility Management:
    • Leads and participates in all maintenance and engineering operations, ensuring that facilities and equipment consistently meet Hard Rock’s standards for quality and safety.
    • Actively develops, executes, and participates in a comprehensive preventative maintenance program to minimize downtime and extend equipment lifespan.
    • Conducts routine and as-needed inspections, repairs, and maintenance on building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire safety, to ensure seamless operations.
    • Utilizes the Quore system to log, track, and manage guest complaints, resolutions, and maintenance requests, ensuring timely and effective follow-up to enhance guest satisfaction and operational efficiency.
    • Coordinates with and works alongside external vendors and contractors, overseeing and assisting with repairs, installations, and inspections to achieve optimal performance and regulatory compliance.
  2. Health & Safety Leadership:
    • Oversees and actively enforces all health & safety protocols across the property, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and Hard Rock’s standards.
    • Leads health & safety training programs for all departments, empowering staff with essential knowledge and skills to maintain a safe work environment.
    • Conducts regular health & safety inspections, documents findings, and implements corrective actions to maintain a secure environment for guests and team members.
    • Partners with Risk Management to ensure all engineering and facilities activities support workplace safety and emergency preparedness.
  3. Financial & Energy Efficiency Oversight:
    • Manages and participates in the day-to-day financial operations of the engineering department, including budgeting for repairs, parts, labor, and resource allocation.
    • Monitors utility consumption, implementing and maintaining energy-efficient practices to reduce costs and environmental impact.
    • Regularly reviews financial performance, ensuring departmental goals align with overall hotel objectives through effective cost-control measures.
  4. Project Management & Preopening:
    • Directly oversees and contributes to engineering-related aspects of preopening and renovation projects, working hands-on with contractors and vendors to ensure on-time, on-budget completion.
    • Develops and implements project plans for capital improvements, expansions, or renovations, maintaining property standards with minimal disruption to guest services.
    • Personally inspects completed projects to confirm adherence to Hard Rock’s brand standards and regulatory compliance requirements.
  5. Leadership & Team Development:
    • Leads recruitment, training, and development for the engineering team, fostering a collaborative culture focused on teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
    • Conducts regular team meetings to review operational goals, safety standards, and performance metrics, setting clear expectations for quality and compliance.
    • Provides hands-on guidance to team members, celebrating achievements and creating a positive work environment that reflects Hard Rock’s brand values.
    • Encourages open communication, maintaining an “open door” policy to address team feedback and concerns professionally.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in engineering or facilities management within a multi-department hospitality environment, such as a hotel, event space, or similar venue.
  • Degree or Diploma in Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field, or 5+ years of equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven ability to deliver a high level of service within a luxury environment, with strong diplomatic and professional communication skills when interacting with guests.
  • Strong technical expertise in building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire safety) and proven experience implementing and participating in preventative maintenance programs.
  • Exceptional leadership and team-building skills with a focus on hands-on involvement and the ability to inspire a high-performing team.
  • Demonstrated experience with health & safety management, including conducting training and enforcing protocols across departments.
  • Excellent project management, organizational, and communication skills, with a strong attention to detail and a commitment to operational efficiency.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • A successful candidate will be comfortable in a high-energy, service-oriented environment and be able to manage multiple functions and priorities.
  • Identifies and understands issues, problems and opportunities; evaluates alternatives and solutions, while comfortable making and taking responsibility for decisions.
  • Familiarity with energy-efficient practices and sustainability initiatives is a plus.
  • A suitable applicant shall have a valid driver’s license and own hand tools.

Preferred Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Technical, Trade or Vocational School Degree.
  • Certified Pool Operator.
  • First Aid & CPR.
  • 309A License.
  • Preopening experience in a hospitality setting is also an asset.
