Job description

SUMMARY OF POSITION :

Reporting to the General Manager, the Director of Care is accountable for directing and mentoring care staff to ensure resident-focused care is achieved, maintaining accountability of the nursing staff to ensure that individualized resident care is appropriate and in place, and promoting departmental activities to maintain high quality resident care. Primary responsibilities include mentoring the staff to ensure the assessment of resident needs, planning and implementation of Nursing programs to meet resident needs, and coordination of ongoing education for nursing staff at the facility. An ability to communicate effectively with residents and their families, staff, and others in the community is essential. The Director of Care acts as a professional role model for all staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  1. Engage and mobilize your team to achieve the purpose, goals, objective and key results of the organization.
  2. Be an engaged collaborative team player, developing and maintaining professional relationships that support and strengthen the organizational culture and purpose.
  3. Model the values and leadership behaviours of the organization and inspire others to do the same.
  4. Ensures ongoing development of comprehensive care plans tailored to the resident's short and long term requirements.
  5. Ensures the care plans are monitored and evaluated for effectiveness and changing care needs and ensures appropriate action is taken in a timely manner.
  6. Provides residents with a safe and comfortable environment.
  7. Ensures schedules and work assignments meet or exceed the provincial and legal requirements for professional nursing and other care-related services.
  8. Provides leadership and direction to staff involved in the provision of continuing care by fostering and promoting new initiatives; interpreting and implementing care related policies and procedures.
  9. Coordinates and communicates with other departments and staff to ensure that goals and planned changes are monitored and reviewed.
  10. Ensures all Nursing staff receive orientation upon hire, In-service training, work assignments, monitoring, and performance evaluations.
  11. Provides staff with a safe and well-equipped environment.
  12. Is directly involved in the recruitment, disciplining and termination of staff.
  13. Networks with other Care Directors and health care professionals within and outside the organization.
  14. Shares information and participates on multi-site committees to develop and implement best practices throughout the organization.
  15. Required to work positively and collaboratively with all team members and supervisors.
  16. Ensures that care programs are delivered in a professional manner within the current budget allocation and in accordance with provincial standards and legal requirements dictated for the provision of nursing and other clinical services.
  17. Reconciles long-term care activity reports to ensure resident days and levels of care concur with revenues derived from the regionally funded daily rate; responsible for forecasting budget requirements and monitoring and approving expenditures including identifying and recommending new sources for products and services and providing rationale for budget variances.
  18. Liaises with Health Authority to ensure pre-screening for suitability and timely admissions to vacant funded accommodation.
  19. Works with Marketing Manager to assess care requirements and suitability of private pay applicants.
  20. Works closely with Assisted Living and Marketing Managers to facilitate appropriate and timely transfer of assisted living and independent living residents from their current accommodation to licensed care beds.
  21. Audits and monitors the administration of medication.
  22. Monitors mechanisms to control the use of narcotics.
  23. Investigates, documents report, and takes the appropriate corrective action in situations where a serious incident has occurred.
  24. Ensures that there are Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives undertaken in relation to care and the development of best practices.
  25. Ensures that initiatives are based on audit outcomes and indicators.
  26. Exchanges information and resolves Serious Incident situations related to Nursing and direct resident care with outside agencies including but not limited to Ministry of Health, Community Care Facilities Licensing, Community Health Services, education institutions, local health units; WCB; etc.
  27. Ensures licensing requirements as outlined by the Residential Care Regulations and Pharmacy review are met. In the absence of an Assistant General Manager, is the Person In-Charge when the General Manager is not working on site. Is responsible for monitoring and addressing Nursing standards and daily staffing levels.
  28. As an integral member of the site management team, participates in decision-making - particularly in matters related to health and safety, resident care, financial, and human resources management.
  29. Ensures that there are effective communication systems in place for staff, residents and families.
  30. Participates in Manager On-Call roster and schedule.
  31. Perform all other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  1. 2 to 4 years' management and/or supervisory experience preferred. Experience in a Long-term care, Assisted Living or senior services setting an asset.
  2. Successful completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and current BCCNM registration in the province of British Columbia.
  3. All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

  1. Ability to multi-task.
  2. Sound financial management skills and understanding of funding in a residential care setting.
  3. Ability to plan, direct and control the delivery of multi-faceted care services.
  4. Computer literacy in a Windows environment, including email, basic word and excel.
  5. Extensive knowledge of the Community Care and Assisted Living Act; Residential Care Regulations; Service Provider Manual, including criteria for complex care.
  6. Must be able to read, write, and verbally communicate effectively in English.
  7. Customer service oriented.
  8. Ability to maintain effective interpersonal and team relationships.
  9. Demonstrates conflict resolution skills.
  10. Demonstrates empathy and understanding of the needs of seniors and disabled persons.

Special Requirements :

  1. Must be willing to work the hours necessary to ensure the effective operation of the facility.
  2. Must have the capacity to deal with physical and mental impairment, death, and dying.
  3. Must be prepared to respond to emergent situations.

  2. Professional Nurses (i.e. RNs; LPNs).
  3. Nursing Clerk.
  4. Care Aides (i.e. RCAs).
