POSITION OVERVIEW
The Director, Growth and Acquisition Capital, will work closely with the Managing Director of Thrive Lab to develop innovative co-investment solutions to deploy equity and hybrid debt-equity capital to women-led impact-driven growth-stage companies or to support Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) for women. With direct investment/coinvestment or private equity experience, the incumbent will play a key role in structuring the deployment of catalytic capital through a variety of instruments, including equity, quasi-equity, and mezzanine.
Investments will be allocated in collaboration with a wide range of ecosystem partners, including specialized or impact funds, private equity groups, corporate funds, M&A groups, and lending partners. To this end, the Director, Investment and Innovation for Growth and Acquisitions will have to distinguish themselves by their ability to quickly establish and maintain relationships of trust with a variety of stakeholders. They will also need to have a broad knowledge of different investment structures and to be creative in proposing solutions that meet the needs of women-led businesses.
CHALLENGES TO BE MET
- Structure and manage the investment operations of the second pillar of the Thrive Lab (Growth and Acquisition Capital) and monitor the performance of the investments that will be realized (impact and financial KPIs).
- Propose and implement innovative solutions to deploy equity and hybrid debt-equity capital, while protecting the interests of BDC Capital.
- Develop investment processes for the evaluation and assessment of new and follow-on investments including the process of sourcing and screening new investments, conducting due diligence, performing industry research and providing support to existing portfolio companies.
- Develop processes to conduct business plan reviews, manage communications with entrepreneurs, management teams, and financial advisors, and prepare initial investment thesis, memoranda and recommendations to pursue or decline investment opportunities.
- Develop best practices to conduct research and analysis on markets, ecosystems, financial forecasts, management, competition, among others.
- Support portfolio companies by monitoring performance, providing financial, forecasting and statistical analyses, identifying potential strategic and tactical opportunities and risks, and working alongside senior management to develop governance and impact reporting.
- Lead in developing and managing the deal pipeline and portfolio dashboard, producing semi-annual reports, providing financial analysis on the overall portfolio and supporting the Managing Director with internal presentations.
- Take a leading role in the deal submission process through Investment Committee.
- Represent BDC Capital and Thrive Lab on various committees.
- Support and coach analysts in managing and monitoring investments, setting up and tracking forecasts and results, using appropriate data.
- Engage BDC Capital's various stakeholders, both internally and externally, and ensure that our policies and best practices are followed.
- Provide rigorous yet flexible processes that allow agility and innovation while protecting the interests of BDC Capital, and ensure that these processes are followed with tact and leadership.
- Participate in negotiations with the ecosystem partners to ensure optimal co-investment conditions are in place.
- Ensure, in collaboration with the analysts' team, to provide regular reporting that respects the criteria of excellence promoted by BDC Capital.
- Monitor issues encountered and propose solutions in a proactive, positive and goal-oriented manner.
- Take an interest in the reality of women entrepreneurs and business leaders, remain attentive to their needs and participate in the creation of additional initiatives if relevant in order to optimize the impact of BDC Capital through the Thrive Lab.
- At all times, contribute to the creation and maintenance of a healthy and friendly work climate within the team, where trust, transparency and collaboration are essential conditions for the success of the Thrive Lab.
- Provide growth opportunities for all team members by working collaboratively and inclusively with the team responsible for the first Lab initiative.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, law or business; a graduate degree would be an asset.
- Eight to ten years of relevant experience; fund management experience an asset.
- Knowledge of the Private Equity asset class, particularly in Canada; knowledge of Impact investing an asset.
- Strong ability to structure debt and equity transactions for a variety of risk levels.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, combined with the ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders and directly influence them.
- Highly developed organizational, planning and management skills.
- Strong attention to detail while maintaining overarching goals in sight.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure to meet tight and often conflicting deadlines.
- Strong team spirit.
- Ability to effectively guide and coach a team of analysts and other investment professionals.
- Good judgment, tact and discretion.
- Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills, oral and written, in both official languages (French and English).
