About the role
The Sun Life Health (SLH) business within Sun Life Canada is a leading provider of Group Benefits and Health Solutions. A market leader in the advancement of workplace mental health across Canada, through the introduction of new tools such as Lumino Health Virtual Care and Stress Management and Well-Being program providing members access to mental health and medical specialists 24/7. SLH is seeking a Director, Finance Data, Risk and Controls to join its fast-paced and energetic Finance team.
Reporting to the AVP, Accounting and Controls Transformation, this role will lead the Financial Controls and Audit & Risk teams accountable for accounting and control activities critical to the Sun Life Health business, as well as identifying opportunities for streaming and automation.
What you will be doing
- Leading a team of twelve finance professionals located across Montreal, Toronto, and Waterloo.
- Accountable for monthly and quarterly reconciliations processes for Sun Life Health, including improvement of historical match rates and automation.
- Lead Frontier implementation execution and automation working closely with partners across finance and IT.
- Coordinate and lead GB audits, as the main point of contact, including CSAE 3416, financial controls (external and internal audit), working with multiple stakeholders across Finance, Operations, and Audit teams.
- Partner across BU’s, Finance and Business to innovate processes for continuous improvement.
- Accountable for management of End User Computing (EUCs) and Risk Models to ensure continued policy compliance.
- Draft ICFR/Error memos and technical accounting/application memos for new or changing businesses.
- ICFR and control process streamlining to review our controls and processes and identify areas that can be simplified and/or automated.
- ICFR quarterly attestation and monitoring controls coordination, including errors/materiality calls.
- Quarterly balance sheet review and variance commentary.
- Write-off reporting and coordination.
- Drive knowledge transfer, training documentation for onboarding.
- Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery.
- Coordination of access reviews.
- Lead ad hoc strategic projects to add value and insights for the business.
What you need to succeed
- Professional Finance designation with 5+ years of experience in financial management leadership roles.
- Strong accounting, analysis, and reporting skills and a deep understanding of IFRS and SOX controls relevant to the insurance industry.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills.
- Attention to accuracy and detail.
- Self-motivated, results-oriented and flexible to changing priorities and timelines.
- Proven technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Experienced people manager with strong interpersonal and coaching skills.
- Demonstrated ability to proactively lead and execute change, foster a continuous improvement culture, develop, and mentor team members.
- As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide.
- As a condition of the role, the successful candidate must obtain a Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance through Sun Life.
Assets
- CPA or CA professional designation experience preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- Experience in project management, Financial Reporting, Technical Accounting and Process Optimization.
- Experience working in the insurance industry or a large financial institution.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills; success at cultivating strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and creating partnerships at all levels within the organization.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.
