Johnson & Johnson is recruiting for a Director Engineering & Construction Safety to be located in New Brunswick, NJ.

The E&PS Project Delivery Team is looking for a motivated and organized individual to lead the development & deployment of effective and efficient safety management strategy & tactical activities. This includes iterations to standards, guidelines, supporting digital tools, capability building and performance monitoring to drive continuous improvement and reduce operational risk. This is a global impact role, collaborating with the regional and field safety teams and the project delivery group, working with data intelligence teams to turn data into intelligence for the business and creating the key program elements to drive safety in the construction projects.

The Director Engineering & Construction Safety is responsible for deploying comprehensive construction safety standard methodologies and tactics to ensure safe work practices on all projects throughout project construction, verification, and commissioning to operational handover. This role will report directly to the Senior Director, Engineering and Construction Safety Center of Excellence (COE).

A suitable candidate will have strong understanding and technical specialization in engineering design, construction safety to recognize and control risks potentially posed by all activities and related works in the construction and renovation of manufacturing sites, warehouses, office buildings, and laboratories.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop programs, standards/guidelines, tools and mechanisms with associated training materials for improving safety performance and SIF prevention aligned with J&J Standards.
  • Identify management system gaps and prioritize needs according to the architecture elements of Leadership, Planning, Support, Operational Controls, Performance Management, and Continuous Improvement.
  • Prepare regular performance presentations and information for PD Leaders to have clear read on how they are performing. Develop dashboards to track the overall health of our CS programs and reports for actionable insights.
  • Lead the monthly global construction safety team meetings to performance monitoring, drive & sustain safety culture and alignment with pivotal safety programs.
  • Collaboration with EH&S SME’s to ensure that design and construction best practices are embedded within Enterprise EHS Standards, in support of both capital projects and safely sustaining construction related activity in operations.
  • Support streamlining and automation of construction safety processes through the implementation of digital solutions.
  • Deploy CS standards across project sites to assure compliance with health & safety laws and J&J standards, proactive risk management on construction projects and ensure all who come to work on our sites return home safe every day.
  • Ensure standards are communicated to all construction safety partners and their subcontractors.
  • Conducts safety trainings on application of standards and use of CS related tools (e.g., templates, digital tools).
  • Support the Regional Safety & Project Safety Team (Safety DRI (Direct Responsibly Individuals) in deployment of standards, programs, technical support and capability building.
  • Accelerate shift to Human and Organizational Performance (HOP)/psychosocial well-being in construction risk management, build HOP fluency and capacity in project teams.
  • Collaborate with CM’s to ensure proactive engagement of frontline workers in safety across all projects.
  • Drive a learning culture to prevent recurrence of SIF-p events.
  • Actively collaborate with key partners, CM’s and other key contract parties to learn from each other and drive continuous improvement together.
  • Facilitate and embed a culture of innovation and disruption to identify innovative solutions to reduce SIF risk.
  • Support construction site assurance program, visits construction sites and conduct safety assessments in close collaboration with project teams. Support any remediation plans required.
  • Identifies appropriate remediation activities for incidents or hazards and ensures remediation is carried out. Employs a closed looped system to assess, mitigate and monitor safety risks.

Qualifications

Education:

  • A minimum of a University Bachelor’s degree or equivalent level degree required
  • Science, Engineering, Construction Management or related EH&S field / degree is preferred

Experience and Skills:

Required

  • A minimum of 10 years of dynamic experience in construction safety program development and management
  • Consistent record of accomplishment in preventing injuries in core construction, protecting the environment, and conserving natural resources.
  • Strong technical skills and the ability to explain complex issues and requirements in an easily understood manner.
  • Ability to partner with and influence J&J leadership and construction partners to fully embed safety standards and policies and to continue to embrace leading practices as they emerge.
  • Demonstration of strong business acuity that includes experience working with leaders and all levels of the organization.
  • Experience in data analytics (e.g. Power BI) and ability to develop key data insights to drive performance improvements.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal and influencing skills.

Other:

  • Work experience in Medical Device and/or Pharmaceutical Construction projects is preferred.
  • Language requirements – Proficiency in English (both oral and written)
  • This position will require up to 50% domestic and international travel

The anticipated base pay range for this position is: $146,000 to $251,850

Additional Description for Pay Transparency:

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis. Employees and/or eligible dependents may be eligible to participate in the following Company sponsored employee benefit programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance. This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program.
