The opportunity:

The Director, Advancement Marketing works to meaningfully engage with UM alumni and donors through strategic marketing and communications initiatives that move the university’s advancement mission forward. The Director and their team play a vital role in promoting and building the reputation of the university as a strong philanthropic partner for those looking to making a difference. As UM prepares for its next major fundraising campaign, this position is critical to the planning and success of UM’s fundraising efforts. It’s an exciting time to join our team!

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • A Degree in communications, marketing or other related specialization is required.
  • The ideal candidate will also have specialized marketing communications education and/or PR diploma or certification.
  • Seven years of directly related experience at a senior level required - leading and inspiring a marketing and/or communications team - preferable in an agency or large, complex organization.
  • Experience within a higher education, advancement and/or non-profit environment required.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully building, managing and evaluating marketing and communications strategies in a large, complex organizational environment required.
  • Demonstrated experience planning, developing and measuring multi-channel marketing communications campaigns required.
  • Demonstrated experience leading marketing research and analytics activities and in turn, using insights to design and recommend the ideal user experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience and best practice knowledge of both offline and online marketing communications channels required.
  • Demonstrated experience managing relationships and projects with external vendors required.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering high-quality and engaging stories and content required.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Exceptional leadership and relationship building skills required.
  • Excellent written and presentation skills required.
  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize conflicting demands required.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and negotiate required.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate and mentor creative teams required.
  • Must have the ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Must possess a high degree of independence, diplomacy, and the ability to work collectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven record of success in marketing, communications and working with all levels of staff, including senior administration; including board members; external stakeholders; government officials; business leaders and community representatives is an asset.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
  • Must be available during non-regular business hours, such as evenings and/or weekends, to attend events / meetings off-campus, on a semi-regular basis.
