Overview:
Provides leadership for the Montreal Service Center’s Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) and sustainability program. This position is responsible for supporting the facility management goal of providing a safe and secure environment for our employees, contractors, visitors, and the surrounding community in cooperation with facility and corporate Operations and EHS objectives, targets, and goals. To ensure compliance with all EHS regulatory and Responsible Care requirements. To understand and strategically reduce EHS risk to all stakeholders via a proactive and continuous improvement approach.
Responsibilities:
This position will interact with senior executives, functional leaders, Service Center managers, and operations staff throughout the organization. Key functional groups and customers for this position are EH&S, Quality, Operations, Inspections, Materials, NDE, Customer Service, Engineering, Human Resources, external regulatory agencies, and Maintenance Procurement among others.
This position will focus on research and analysis of environmental, health, safety, and quality-related issues. It is an independent, cross-functional key position that contributes significant knowledge and influence to the GATX Operations group in order to achieve our defined initiatives. This position must also be effective in working with and influencing hourly employees.
Direct reports may include a cross-functional coordinator, the rescue team members, and the Health & Safety Committee.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience Required (including certifications):
- Bachelor’s degree with concentration in Science, Engineering, Operations or related field, or Associate’s Degree with equivalent experience Health & Safety, Environmental Sustainability.
- 3+ years of experience in a production environment with safety and environmental responsibility (or equivalent in EHS consulting role).
- Specific knowledge and experience with confined space entry, elevated work hazards and incident prevention and investigation.
- Working knowledge of Quebec environmental and safety regulations and Workers Compensation Board / case management procedures.
- Responsible Care Management System and/or SafeStart experience is a plus.
- Railroad or tank cleaning experience is a plus.
- Experience in union environment is a plus.
- Proven ability to work and interact with multiple departments throughout our facility and build relationships with the corporate office.
- An enthusiastic team player with a strong drive to improve existing processes and systems is highly desired.
- Bilingual: French and English required.

Other and physical requirements include but are not limited to:
- This position is required to be present at the facility during hours of operation and frequently walk around the shop floor.
- Minimal travel required within the US and Canada.

- Ability to perform outdoor work (in cold and hot environment).
