Job description

The successful candidate will participate as a member of the Hydro Mechanical Services Team and perform advanced Journeyperson level mechanical work and system diagnostics in support of diesel generation and hydro generation as well as associated balance of plant equipment including but not limited to compressors, heat exchangers, oil and fuel systems, tools, governors and mobile equipment.

The successful candidate shall always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health & Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules & regulations, and continually practice health & safety while performing any duties.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of other employees, contractors and the general public in the workplace by:
    • Reporting any failure to adhere to safety practices or rules
    • Providing detailed orientations and identification of hazards to all visitors
    • Removing hazards or making the workplace safe when leaving a work area
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of the Health & Safety program, Environment program as well as NTPC’s safety culture.
  • Participate in team meetings in accordance with the principles of team management to determine generation program objectives, to provide input to group financial and program planning, and to assess and coordinate unit workload and priorities.
  • Maintain and repair small, medium and large size diesel engines, generators of various sizes and auxiliary equipment as per Corporation guidelines, acting in a pro-active manner to make timely recommendations for continuous improvement of operations and equipment.
  • Complete and/or assist with scheduled overhauls in a timely and professional manner according to Corporation and Manufacturer standards.
  • Make routine trips to remote satellite plants for inspection, preventative maintenance, installation and repairs to equipment and to complete various tests as required (e.g., such as vibration monitoring, lubricating oil and water sampling).
  • Complete trip and equipment reports, prepare required parts lists for diesel maintenance and fuel and oil inventories, provide distributed labor data, and ensure valid travel and freight costing within our CMMS program.
  • Provide accurate assessment of equipment and diesel plants and troubleshoot various mechanical problems both on site and over the telephone.
  • Provide assistance to other trades and contractors as required and provide guidance and training to operational staff for troubleshooting of large gas or diesel engines.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment in the performance of work, maintain all tools and equipment in good working condition, and ensure compliance to all safety programs, health and safety legislation, and Corporation Safety Rules in the completion of work activities.
  • Provide training to and receive training from co-workers and perform other related duties as determined by the work group in consultation with the Director, Thermal Region.

Qualifications

  • Journeyperson Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic with three years’ experience at the journeyperson level in an industrial or commercial setting. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • Valid NWT Class 5 driver's license or equivalent required.
  • Must undergo a successful criminal background check.
  • Must have the ability to diagnose problems and propose solutions.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, diagrams, and specifications of a variety of types of mechanical equipment, including manufacturer's manuals and parts books.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in written and verbal form, as well as work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.

Salary for this position ranges from $45.15 / hr. - $54.86 / hr. plus a location allowance of approximately $6,184 per annum. We offer a comprehensive benefits package which includes health and dental benefits, long-term disability, life insurance, paid sick days and a defined benefits pension plan. Relocation assistance will be provided.
