Based out of Edmonton, Alberta, the Design Manager leads and manages the design process for a project from procurement, through commencement of design (pre-award) to the finalization of all design work and award of construction subcontracts. The Design Manager is responsible for contributing to the development of the Design team while ensuring procedures and best practices are followed.
What You Will Be Working On
Review and understand contractual obligations, scope of work requirements, project budgets and retain, monitor and lead the consulting team best suited to the project parameters and ensure minimal compliance, including area checks, efficiency of the layout (corridors, electrical), and gross up factors and audit the design documents against requirements, ensuring they are complete and meet industry quality standards.
Develop and manage QA processes to ensure compliance with the contractual obligations and completeness of the design.
Develop detailed design schedules that are coordinated with the overall project schedule. Ensure the consultant team complies with the design schedules and ensure other parties provide information in a timely manner to not delay the design process.
Regular reporting to project team members and senior management related to design schedule performance and quality of deliverables.
Act as the primary point of contact with the client (design related matters), the consultant team and municipalities and other authorities having jurisdiction in relation to all design related matters.
Work with other senior managers to support and/or lead other specific business development/procurement initiatives within the branch.
Ensure that design policies and procedures are followed and lead the continuous improvement of the design policy and procedures.
Liaise with and support the project execution team to ensure the design documents meet the execution team’s requirements and ensure awareness of the design risk associated with the project.
Build and maintain effective relationships with clients, design consultants, municipal personnel, trade partners, and other stakeholders.
Manage expectations and mentor others on the overall design process and communicate the highly technical design elements to all levels of management as required.
Lead, promote, and maintain a positive safety culture within the team, without compromise.
What We Are Looking For
Completion of a University program in a technical, business, or scientific field of study; degree in Engineering or Architecture is an asset.
Ideal candidates will come from a construction management background with demonstrated experience as a Project Manager or a Development Manager in a build or design/build environment in the ICI sector, preferably with a general contractor.
LEED, PMP, and P. Eng designations are assets.
Minimum 15 years combined of construction management/design build/design experience.
Proficiency using MS Office Suite and BIM software tools.
Working knowledge of Navisworks (3D and 4D) and REVIT (extract data, open models).
Experience with ACONEX or Revizto is an asset.
A portfolio that includes large commercial and institutional projects as well as understanding the P3 procurement model (DBFM) - With a sound understanding of the design process related to each type of build.
Proven leadership and project management skills to support a collaborative approach to delivering results.
Can effectively provide overall supervision, coordination and scheduling of activities and have a thorough understanding of applicable regulatory requirements and industry practices.
A strong leader and problem-solver, able to build relationships and steward trust with clients, consultants, and team members to effect competitive excellence and pride in teamwork with outstanding project delivery.
