Career Opportunity

The Overhead Engineering team of TTC’s Streetcar Infrastructure Department leads and manages projects related to electrical power distribution across its streetcar network. The Design Engineer, Electrical and Traction Power is an exciting opportunity for a passionate electrical engineer who enjoys both design work and working closely with on-site and operational teams.

What You Will Do

  • Provide engineering design expertise for the TTC's electrical and traction power systems, ensuring compliance with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) standards.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Planning, scheduling, and producing detailed designs, contract specifications, and engineering drawings for electrical and traction power projects.
  • Coordinating and guiding TTC staff, consultants, contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers in related design work; checking and approving designs, resolving issues, and ensuring compliance with TTC standards.
  • Preparing engineering calculations, designs, and specifications for planned and emergency work, and supporting testing and commissioning of new systems.
  • Working closely with operational teams to investigate, evaluate, and test new, existing, or proposed systems, troubleshooting operational problems, and recommending alternate designs and solutions.
  • Participating in estimating, budgeting, and procurement processes as required.
  • Conducting feasibility studies, surveys, and assessments of existing systems and equipment; ensuring conformance to design and reporting safety, reliability, and quality issues.

What Qualifications Do You Bring

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • A university degree in a related discipline (i.e., Electrical Engineering), or equivalent education, training, and experience.
  • Experience leading projects and applying electrical engineering principles, methods, and practices.
  • Proven experience in the design of electrical and/or traction power systems and associated equipment.
  • Field experience dealing with multiple stakeholders; experience in a unionized environment is an asset.
  • Knowledge of electronic testing equipment, transformers, switch gear, emergency power supplies, and power distribution systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and technical report writing skills.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and software related to the work, including Microstation CADD systems.
