Department of Biological Sciences - Ecosystem Ecology Research Assistant/Technician
Summary
A Research Assistant/Technician is required to participate in studies of the ecological factors controlling plant productivity, ecosystem carbon sequestration, and trace gas exchange (methane and nitrous oxide) in two wetland ecosystems in southern Alberta.
Working with the supervisor and other research personnel, the Research Assistant/Technician will participate in field and lab data collection activities, maintenance of research equipment, data entry and some data analysis procedures.
The work term could be:
(i) for the summer growing season (May – August 2025); or
(ii) could start earlier (February or March 2025) and continue for up to 1-2 years, depending on the interests of the job candidates.
LocationWork will be done at the University of Lethbridge and in two wetland ecosystems near the towns of High River, AB and Stirling Lake, AB.
Duties and Responsibilities- Help conduct measurements of ecosystem carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide exchange.
- Conduct plant biomass and leaf area index measurements at field sites.
- Collect and process plant, soil, water and air samples for chemical analyses.
- Conduct historical analyses of meteorological data and vegetation productivity based on remote sensing measurements of vegetation greenness ( NDVI ).
- Perform inspection and maintenance of micro-meteorological sensors at field sites.
Minimum Required Qualifications- At least 2nd year standing in a B.Sc. program in Biology, Geography or Environmental Science.
- Must possess a valid vehicle driver’s license.
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Office programs.
- Willingness to learn, ability to work well in a team environment, and a positive attitude.
- Ability and interest to work in the field under a range of environmental conditions.
- Experience in use of computer environments like R Studio or MatLab would be an asset.
- Experience in using GIS software and analyzing remote sensing images would be an asset.
- Previous experience conducting field work would be an asset.
Required Physical Abilities:- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs; kneeling, bending, stooping, hand dexterity
