Job description

Durham Continuing Education is actively seeking Tutors for the 2025 Summer School Program.

Job Summary:

The DCE Summer School Tutor will work with students from Grades 9-12 to support them with summer school classes at our Summer School 2025 site – Sinclair S.S. in Whitby - or via an online format.

Summer School tutors are employed to provide one-to-one or small group academic support. This will include working with individual students or small groups of students in person or online with their learning, assignments, answering subject specific questions, assisting students who may require accommodations, reviewing lessons taught by the teacher with students and other such tasks as assigned.

Major Duties:

  • Report to the assigned school daily for set working hours
  • Monitor the online booking system for appointments
  • Sit with a single student or small group of students to help them work through the classroom assigned tasks/homework.
  • Maintain a log of student activity to be shared with Summer School Administration
  • Maintain a liaison with Summer School Administration
  • Complete other such duties as assigned by the Principal.
  • Log in to a Google Classroom daily for set working hours
  • Monitor the chat function in the Google Classroom and answer inquiries
  • Facilitate drop-in Google Meets with a single student or small group of students to help them work through the classroom assigned tasks/homework
  • Maintain a log of student activity to be shared with Summer School Administration
  • Maintain a liaison with Summer School Administration
  • Complete other such duties as assigned by the Principal.

Equipment Required:

  • A computer with video and microphone capabilities

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of at least one year of post-secondary studies at either the College or University level.
  • Good communication and technology skills are required.
  • Computer proficiency in the Google Suite and the Microsoft Suite is required.
  • Experience working with students in a school environment is an asset.
  • Experience with e-learning or such course modes of delivery is an asset.
  • Post-Secondary studies in Concurrent or Consecutive Education, English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics is an asset.

Please note:

The class start date is July 2, 2025, and will run Monday-Friday; however, there will be training provided in late June. The anticipated hours of work are as follows:

On-site Tutors: July 2nd - 25th – 8:15 am - 2:30 pm

Virtual Tutors: July 2nd - 24th – 3 pm - 8 pm and July 29th - August 19th – 2 pm - 7 pm

  • If you are successful, you will need to provide a Criminal Background Check / Police Check with (VSS) that is no more than 6 months old.
