Position Summary:

The Sustainability Coordinator helps organize, monitor, and maintain sustainability initiatives under the supervision of the Managing Director of Administration and Operations. A primary focus of the Sustainability Coordinator is to measure, track, and report on sustainability metrics throughout the institution, including data required for annual reporting, regular updates, and specific projects as needed. Data collection includes activities such as conducting waste audits, reviewing and entering billing data, and conducting sustainability-related data assessments. In addition, the SC supports the successful implementation of sustainability initiatives by identifying areas for improvement, performing research, communicating new practices, coordinating with key implementers, and assisting in the planning of special projects as assigned. The SC serves as the institutional representative with the national US Green Business Council and with the regional and local sustainability organizations. The SC represents MHS on green issues with the American Alliance Museums and other museum organizations.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide daily hands-on support to ensure that the Society’s sustainability initiatives are successfully being implemented throughout the institution.
  • Develop and implement organizational processes and policies for sustainable practices.
  • Monitor all sustainability practices for compliance and efficiency and develop a list of areas that require improvement.
  • Work with supervisor to recognize any emerging sustainability issues.
  • Evaluate and advise proposals for sustainability projects/events for feasibility and compliance.
  • Support facilities and other departments as appropriate in relation to implementing energy conservation and sustainability programs.
  • Create and maintain sustainability documentation and processes internally.
  • Develop sustainability reports, presentations, and proposals for the benefit of the MHS and public interest.
  • Conduct environmental assessments at all MHS sites (waste audits, energy, and water usage, along with handling of universal waste and chemicals).
  • Benchmark, analyze and report mandated electrical, gas, and water data to City of St. Louis annually.
  • Obtain and maintain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications for MHS.
  • Oversee LEED related projects and programs.
  • Obtain and maintain TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) certification for MHS.
  • Oversee TRUE related projects and programs.
  • Oversee Green Infrastructure projects and equipment.
  • Cultivate and participate in regional sustainability programs and/or working groups.
  • Participate in St. Louis Green Business Challenge with the creation of case studies annually.
  • Research and identify grant-writing and other funding opportunities in support of the MHS sustainability efforts.
  • Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses
