The Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Data Scientist, Bioinformatics. This Full-time, Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months, with the possibility of extension.

This role will be part of the One Child Every Child (OCEC) Program, a Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) initiative, with a vision for all Canadian children to be the healthiest, most empowered and thriving in the world.

This position reports to the Program Manager, Data Science who leads the execution of the Comprehensive Data Accelerator plan within OCEC. The Data Scientist will analyze and visualize diverse datasets, assess the performance of new and existing machine learning models, and assist in the deployment of our machine learning technology stack in support of the OCEC Project. The Data Scientist is responsible for developing production-level processing workflows for various datasets. The incumbent will create high-performance custom software, collaborate with investigators and laboratory personnel to gather specifications, uphold excellence in documentation and code standards, and facilitate the deployment of our machine learning technology stack.

One Child Every Child is a Parallel Paths project that has Indigenous and non-Indigenous Paths. All members of the program will perform training on work with Indigenous people, communities and data. Experience with Indigenous community-based work is an asset for members of the OCEC research team.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Work with the Program Manager and Research Computing Services (RCS) to develop production-level, automated -omics workflows
  • Develop and maintain quality control tools for data flow through the processing infrastructure, including synthetic data generation tools
  • Consult internal stakeholders and develop novel statistical and machine learning models to solve data-intensive problems across the research Themes and Accelerators of the One Child Every Child initiative
  • Keep current with best practices and provide recommendations to enhance technology, processes and collaboration
  • Address intricate problems by evaluating and reinterpreting established solutions
  • Assist in the resolution of highly complex challenges through advanced problem-solving proficiency and analytical reasoning capabilities
  • Provide documentation and training in bioinformatics and -omics processing for researchers, and assist lab staff in becoming production-ready
  • Provide technical expertise for grant applications and publications, when required
  • Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience as a subject-matter expert (SME)

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master's degree in computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or related quantitative field; PhD preferred
  • 5-10 years of demonstrated experience working with -omics data in a medical related field or research setting is required
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics methods and tools is required
  • Experience coding in Python is required
  • Strong knowledge of Bayesian analysis and machine learning techniques (classification, regression, clustering)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong time management, organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Able to learn quickly and work independently with minimal supervision
