Job Description

Role: Data Platform Architect

Department: Technology and Innovation

Duration: This is a 1-year contract position with expected extensions

Location: Edmonton, Alberta

Reports to: Manager of Technology Delivery

Role Summary

The Data Platform Architect plays a key role in shaping and overseeing a prominent organization's cloud-based data ecosystem, which spans integration services, data lake platforms, and business intelligence tools. This role is responsible for defining architecture, guiding development practices, and ensuring platforms are well-governed, scalable, and effectively supported by internal teams and managed service providers. Working across technical and operational domains, the Data Platform Architect helps advance the organization’s data maturity by promoting standardization, enabling faster time-to-insight, and striking a balance between delivery speed and long-term platform health. The role requires strong technical leadership, sound architectural judgment, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a dynamic environment with competing priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve the enterprise data architecture strategy to ensure it delivers real business value—supporting operational agility, analytics growth, and long-term scalability.
  • Provide architectural leadership and hands-on technical oversight across cloud-based data platforms, including MuleSoft, Snowflake, Databricks, and Tableau.
  • Guide the design and implementation of data pipelines and access layers that enable timely, reliable insights for both day-to-day operations and strategic decision-making.
  • Establish practical standards for data modeling, metadata, classification, and lineage that strike a balance between governance and usability.
  • Lead the development of reusable, API-led and event-driven integration patterns using MuleSoft to enable fast, secure data exchange across systems.
  • Champion simplification and reusability across platforms and development efforts, enabling faster delivery, lower costs, and easier support.
  • Ensure managed service providers operate and support the platforms effectively, with a strong focus on performance, uptime, and continuous improvement.
  • Validate and refine architectural solutions to ensure they not only meet security and compliance needs but also align with business timelines and delivery expectations.
  • Maintain living architecture documentation and reusable patterns that support onboarding, knowledge sharing, and continuous optimization.
  • Collaborate on technology evaluations and vendor decisions, focusing on long-term maintainability, interoperability, and value creation.
  • Collaborate with delivery teams and external partners to ensure data solutions are fit for purpose, adaptable, and aligned with evolving business needs and priorities.
  • Balance speed and sustainability—helping teams deliver value quickly while maintaining architectural integrity and platform health.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in data architecture, data engineering, or enterprise IT roles with a strong focus on cloud-based platforms and integration.
  • Proven experience in designing and delivering enterprise-scale data integration and analytics solutions.
  • Strong preference for candidates with extensive hands-on experience in:
    • MuleSoft for API-led and event-driven integration
    • Tableau for enterprise reporting and visualization
    • Data lake platforms such as Snowflake and Databricks for scalable cloud-based analytics
  • Familiarity with additional tools and platforms such as Azure One Lake, Power BI, and data governance solutions like Unity, Collibra, or Ataccama.
  • Experience working with cloud infrastructure and services, preferably AWS.
  • Proficient in data modeling across relational, dimensional, and NoSQL paradigms, with knowledge of architectural frameworks such as TOGAF or Zachman.
  • Solid understanding of data governance, privacy, and security frameworks (e.g., NIST, ISO) and their application in enterprise environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee external service providers, enforce standards, and ensure effective operation and support of data platforms.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and collaboration skills with the ability to align technical delivery to business priorities.
  • Experience in regulated industries—particularly airport, transportation, or infrastructure sectors—is considered a strong asset.
